Interestingly,

It may not even be a transmission or an engine problem.
If we get a low mileage engine from Japan, and change the whole thing out that might not even fix it.

However,

That certainly would narrow it down for the possibilities.

thanks Keith. I read all the postings on your problem and I think it helped alot. I will keep you informed... Your situation sounds exactly like mine. The mechanics at Hamilton Subaru are good and I've been impressed with the small amount of work they have done up to this point so I'm optimistic they will be able to find the problem. I just hope it's not as bad as it sounds...
So you are saying that it is not the transmission. Do I read that correctly?

The dealer did replace the transmission with factory rebuilt ones at least 3 times and has conceded that, although my transmission didn't test perfect and did need to be replaced, it did not make a contribution to any cure for my spasmodic rough running engine. My transmission problem only consisted of a lo speed non-accelerated driving with an occasional hard shift. that was going on for almost 2 years and not a biggie! However, I was going to get them to replace it before the warranty ran out but waited to give me a later start on a new one!

On my original replacement almost 2 years ago they had to do it twice to get a good working one.
