to make the 4.11 rear bolt up you either need to swap rear diff carriers OR get another left side axle (no extension). This will eliminate your LSD though

I say stick with a wrx trans... You will need to buy the following to use that trans.

- Clutch fork and boot
- Clutch kit
- Flywheel (yea they are different)
- Hydroulic clutch slave cylinder
- Rear differential

Buying all of those parts is probobly gonna cost more than just getting a wrx tranny

Instead of starting a new topic, i'm going to resurrect this one.

My transmission is in its death throes now, heavy slippage between 2nd and 3rd, and 3rd and 4th - so im just waiting for it to go.

My options are to either get an ebay SVX trans as a temporary fix, or upgrade to a 4.11 or 4.44. It was mentioned the 02-05 WRX trans bolts up to the same rear diff as the SVX, can I use an auto WRX transmission with 3.90 gears for this?

I'm not too mechanically inclined, but I'm not an idiot and have done all work on my car in the past year (except wheel bearings), and am wondering if this is something I can do myself or should I just pay a trans shop?

any help appreciated, my car is still running and its gotta stay that way if I want to stay employed... thanks!

If you can't go without the car for more than two days, I'd suggest either sticking with a stock swap or farming it out to Tom for a 5 spd swap.

Depending on your trans swapping experience, you can even safely do an auto 4.11/4.44 over a weekend.

Unfortunatly a 5mt is not in my future right now, my total budget is under $1000. I'm looking at a rebuilt 4HEAT transmission on ebay, and will probably have a local shop install it.

Here is one a little closer.
4.44

Both Eric and Mike have used this company and are happy with them.

awesome, paterson is less than 45 away from me! I know I have this question cooking in both forums, but it surely won't be a problem if I go with a JDM trans? I know Im being a pain but I want to have the new trans and diff in my trunk and ready to go by the time my current one craps out

those trannies are fine... As long as you don't get your hands on a VTD jdm trans somehow it should work

THANK YOU!

I've been reloading this thread for the past several hours waiting for an answer. theres an EJ25 rear diff waiting for me at the junkyard, and I'm going to go ahead and pick this trans up in Paterson.

At the risk of getting flamed: is it okay to do neutral drops and other foolery to kill off my 4EAT? I think I recall hearing that you can destroy a transmission without hurting much of anything else...

Is it out of a manual or an auto? a manual will be a 4.11, the auto is 4.44

On the top of the case there will be some letters stenciled. 4.11 is "T2", 4.44 is "TP"

Okay, several things:

the diff, its out of a manual.. dang

so I'm getting 4.44 gears in my car when I do the swap? Bet it'll be wicked fast

Tom, how much would you want for the 4.44 diff? I could really use it

Now, I can just take the trans, the ring & pinion swapped diff to my local trans shop and just tell them to put it in, right? There isnt too much involved in this swap, just a simple bolt-in job. I got a quote of $400 to put a used transmission in, which seems fair.

What parts of the exhaust will need to be disconnected, my bolts and gaskets are quite old.

Finally, is there anything else I should optimally get done while the trans it outta the car? anything hard to get to normally that would be a good idea to do?
