Our redline is 7000 rpm, so to simplify lets say you are pulling 6940 rpm in overdrive. Since the car, whether 3.545 or 4.44, has an overdrive ratio of 1 to 0.694, this gives a driveshaft speed of 10,000 rpm. If you have the stock gears,3.545 to 1, then your axle spins at 2820.8744 rpm. This coupled with a 24.86" tall tire gives a speed of 208.62695 mph. Yes, I know the car does not have enough power to go that speed, but that is the math. With the 4.44s, the same 6940 rpm get's 166.57265 mph. Still enough to get ticketed in any state. So, by my own math this says that if I had stock tires, at 3000 rpm I'm actually going 72. 54 mph? I'm tired now, I'll check this tomorrow.

Well Johnny I can see that your RPM question has been answered, but since I actually remembered to look at the gauges on the way home I feel compelled to post my results.
75mph= slightly under the 3000 80mph= slightly over 3000 Stock wheels and tire sizes. These findings seem to be congruent with svxfiles's. When I had my gps hooked up my speedo was always a few mph ahead of the gps's indicated speed. Therefore I do not doubt the numbers svxfiles calculated at all. Calculators don’t lie, Speedometers do. Did I mention that I love the way this thing drives now? Last edited by OrthopodSvx; 03-03-2005 at 11:04 PM. |

I'm thinking that I'm gonna have to find a trans (when it is time to replace) that has a taller overdrive than what I have currently. The current trans is definitely designed for a car capable of pushing only 140 at best. Our cars can do at least 160 if geared properly and I hate the fact that I am limited to "only" 140. I also hate the fact that I am turning close to 4000rpm at 80mph.

OK, I'm awake now. If we were running at 3250 rpm, on the run I spoke of, then the actual vehicle speed, (in referance to the axle rotation,) is 78.00585 mph.
Orthopod, speedometers do lie, but if mine only lies 5 mph at 80, that's not too bad. I was running 225/45/17s that day, and most days when there is no snow. So if you factor the tires, AaHA! 78.351008 mph! well, that explaines it then! Orthopod, how do you like the way it drives, now? 93, I have some tuning to do. and i'm under a little pressure to get things done . It sounds like a super meet and I'm charged up for it Johnny, 7000 rpm,0.78 overdrive, 4.11 to one rears,=2183.5423 axle rpm, gives 161.49098 theoretical mph. So. 4000 rpm should be 92.2804 mph. Johnny, if your engine were actually turning 3750 rpm, ( you did say close to 4000 rpm) that would put your speed at 86.512875, so IF your spedometer read 5 mph low, like mine reads 5 mph high..... Can you run a few miles down the highway at 60 mph, or 75 mph, with a stopwatch and see if your speedometer is incorrect?
