Well first the obvious question, Are you depressing the brake when trying to shift out of park?

Do you hear the lock release when you depress the shifter button?

Is it hard to move the shifter thru other gears (R-N-D-3-2-1)?

Prior to the car warming up "enough" to shift, have you tried the lock release on the base of the shifter?

1)brake will be depressed completely.
2) definately hear the lock release noise comming from over by the steering collumn
3) moves through the gears fine after i get it out of park.
4) i have never messed with the lock release. tell me what i need to know about it.

The lock release is a small slide "switch" on the upper left corner of the shift indicator console (iirc) It allows you to release the shift lever in the event of the brake release malfunctioning.

If your hearing the lock release when your steping on the brake and pushing in the shift button, I can't really say for sure what the problem is, I would guess that the lock release is sticking for some reason, and frees up when the car warms up.
If I can find the time (short handed at work) I'll take a pic of it for ya. (or if someone else get's to it first/has one already please post it)
