Question Problem with the PRND321 shifter lights

Ever since I've had this SVX (bought it in Aug. 2003), the PRND321 lights next to the gear selector haven't lit up. On a few freak occasions, both about 3 - 4 months apart, they have lit up for just one session of driving. They'd turn on sometime while I was driving, and then I'd look down thinking, "Damn! They're working!" Then the next time I would start the car up, they wouldn't light.

Anyway, I'd like to fix it. Is there a bulb hidden in there somewhere? Maybe some connections that can come loose? If it's any correlation, my cig lighter also doesn't work. The few times that the shifter lights have come on, the cig lighter still doesn't work (which makes me think that it's a problem with the cig assembly itself). That damn cig assembly is a ***** to get out, though.

Any ideas?

Yes, there is one small bulb on the left-hand side of the console near the shifter that illuminates the shift legend. I'm sorry that it's been a while since I was in there, so I don't remember what needs to come off to access that assembly.

I seem to recall though that it was one of those small bulbs with the little pairs of looped wires for contacts, if you want to make sure you've got a spare before you start (#1196?).

Hope that helps.

I just changed mine a couple weeks ago, it's a little tricky. Take off the woodgrain bezel around the shifter while sitting in the passenger seat, and put your two fingers down in between the left side of the shift lever assembly and the console. In there you will feel the housing for the bulb at around the N for neutral it scews upwards you can turn it with your two fingers and pull the housing out to change the bulb. Installation is opposite of removal.

You need to pull the instrument panel and replace the bulbs behind the gear indicators. There is one bulb for each letter/number.

As for the shift selector lights, I am going to try fixing them on Monday. Thanks!

Fixed

I unscrewed the small assembly for the bulb, and the bulb appeared to be fine. I removed the small green coupler for the wires for the bulb, and checked all to connections. They all appeared to be clean. I reconnected everything, turned the ignition to "On", and turned on the headlights. The bulb didn't come on, as usual. I used a current tester to see if there was any electric current in the wires, but I didn't see any past the green coupler. I shoved the wires into coupler as far as they would go, and the bulb turned on. I suppose this would explain the intermittent functionality of the bulb.

Stupid electronics and their strict requirements.

I had the same problem, but here is my solution I removed the console and replaced it with a manual shift boot and knob I no longer have manual mode but my wife won't drive it now because she don't know what gear she is in ,I won't tell her nothing about looking at the dash lights.
