Transmission Problem; any ideas?
I have a hopefully small problem with my transmission, any ideas or help appreciated.
Box was rebuilt last December, has done probably 10,000miles since, and was going its best ever. Lately started doing the 1-2 flare, so I feared the worst. However, feeling that mechanically the box is good, I recently replaced the TPS with a brand new one. This did not fix the problem. As it gives a flare between 3-4 also, I am suspecting a loose brake band, and am taking it back to be adjusted. This may cure the problem. However, I am beginning to suspect the TCU could be at fault, so I ran the diagnostic. Current problems show nothing at all [quick blinking], but interestingly, previous problems show code 32, Speed sensor #1. Anyone, particularly Harvey, have any idea if this sensor being faulty could lead to mistimed shifts, or false neutrals, which I suspect would wear the brake band as the soon-to-be-selected gear engaged? Any opinions welcomed. Joe

Greetings Joe,
Re your problem : - The TCU does accept an input from the speed sensor but the only symptoms listed in the manual are, Ò No shift or excessive tight corner ÔbrakingÕ " and there is no suggestion of other symptoms. Was the A (line pressure solenoid) replaced as part of the overhaul as it should have been ? Has the line pressure been checked ? I can see no way that a solenoid valve with a worn and leaking seat can be picked up in a diagnostic check and this is a number one problem. The A solenoid works at a rate of approx 50 cycles per second and wears out rapidly. It should be replaced as a matter of course during any full recondition. Regards, Trevor.

To the best of my knowledge, this solenoid was not replaced. Not sure indeed if any of them were replaced. Are you suggesting that incorrect or low line pressure might cause slippage of the brake band, and aggravate the symptom I am getting? Do I understand you right? Possibly replacing this A solenoid and tightening the band could be an easy fix. Only the sump has to be dropped for the valves to be replaced I think. Now that I remember it, he would not have replaced these valves, they are from a '96 crashed car with low miles. Joe

Hi again Joe,
On the basis of common sense it is of no real use to make further comment from this far away other than to say that if a transmission specialist here in Auckland had done a recondition which lasted only 10,000 miles HE would be sorting out the problem. Does good will have no value up your way ? I could point out that if you do anything yourself or anyone else messes with things you have opened the door for the original reconditioner to say Ò sorry no longer my problem Ò. HI Trevor,
You are correct about the good will element, and I trust the guy "will look after me". He is good on the mechanical side of the fixes, but I suspect not so well informed on the electronics, which is why I am enquiring from those in the know [in advance] if there may be an electronic failure contributing to the problem before I go back to the shop. I will get him to put a meter on the line pressure, and if need be see if it might be best to replace the whole bank of solenoids. Thanks again, Joe
