Exclamation "...between 4K & 10K..."

Wow! I felt guilty once (and a little reckless, maybe) going over 3,500 miles between changes!

Unless you're doing oil analysis using 100% synthetic and swapping out an oil filter once or twice in between, that seems to me to be really pushing it. These are very ruggedly designed bottom ends that normally should last for a very long time if there are no cooling or lubrication problems...

IMHO

Hope it works out for you.

That's a lot of plumbing for the oil to go through.

I must admit I have been guilty of going over 7000 miles on an oil change before. My driving is almost all highway though.. if that means anything. I hope my engine is OK... it sure does make some funny noises sometimes.

I'm sure that highway miles are better for the engine than short commutes or city driving.

Had a 98 F-150 4.6L in the shop the other day, The guy came to a stop lite and the truck died. When out to check it, good strong battery wouldn't turn the motor over. Check the oil theres a littte bit of tar on the end of the stick. So we now know a 4.6L will go 48k with out EVER changing the oil. The guys first oil change cost him $5,000. Live and learn.

synthetics???

I have an odd way to manage oil changes...

I use 20w50 in summer and 10w30 in winter and ONLY synthetic.

I change the filter every 2500 miles or so and top it up with fresh oil.

At about 12 K miles, it gets a complete change. No failures, no problems, nothing ever!!!!

Works for me and I'm a huge believer in synthetics. [if you live where it gets really cold in winter, it does NOT get thick and gooey and contribute to hard starting and slow turn over in winter]

I once changed my oil at afounr 10k. I try my best to change my oil every 3-10k depending on how busy I get and what kind of driving it went though in that period of time. Mainly city, around 3-4k, highway, every 4-10k

Another way to look at it...

I did a quick calculation and I figure that I have probably done 25 oil changes on this car. If I had used synthetic religiously, the engine *may* still be running, but with the money I've saved over the years, I have enough to buy a replacement engine

Every cloud has a silver lining.

oil changes and cost

Doug,

I think that 230K is enough for any engine prior to a rebuild and whether synthetic would have impacted that, who knows? I have NEVER (in my 93 cars to date) ever had such a high miler so I'm no expert ...

I get my oil at Walmart for about $5.00 CDN/$3.00 usd per liter. High quality conventional oil must cost at least $1.50-1.75 so I am not sure that there is much to be saved in cost at the end of the day.

I know its nothing new to you but synthetic does not break down like conventional oils and has significantly better performance at the high and low temp ends of the spectrum plus, I think it just lubricates better ( gut feeling). I think the filter change is every bit as important and the new FRAM double pass filters must be the hot ticket for cleaning out microscopic particulate material.

Anyway, my last thought is that even an older high mileage (79K)engine with dark oil (eg my Mitsubishi) is very clean and amber right up until it gets changed by the third synthetic change.... I have no idea what it had previously....

Richard
