Supercar Killer

Since I'm now a Camaro guy, I thought I would share this. Chevy did a press release for the new Z/28 and invited the magazines to bring any car they want. One brought a GT-R Track edition and a 911 Turbo. They wanted a Porsche GT3, but it didn't make it to them in time. The Z/28 destroyed them on the track. Not too bad for a Camaro, even if it does cost $75,000 without A/C or a radio.

Re: Supercar Killer

Yes but the 911 Turbo is $150,000 and the GTR is $90,000 plus.

Re: Supercar Killer

The Z/28 has been designed as a track car, so the results are only mildly surprising. Check out the suspension and tires that it comes with.

Nice going, GM. Now, make one for $50k

Re: Supercar Killer

A stripped track car was faster than a loaded Porsche .... SHOCKED!

its still impressive (the Nurburgring time, not this stupid magazine challenge), but i still don't like the Camaro because i like to SEE things around me when i'm driving. don't like the looks much, either.

You have the 1LE and the ZL1 in the lower price ranges. The 1LE is an option package on the standard SS. It has already been destroying the Mustang Boss on the track, but isn't going to touch the Porsches and GT-Rs. The ZL1 is in the mid to high $50K range, but is fully loaded and uses the Corvettes Magnetic ride suspension and a 580HP supercharged 6.2L LSX engine.

The Z/28 gets the LS7, special suspension parts and Carbonceramic brakes that will cost yoiuo and extra $9000 on the Porsche. Just read an article, they finally managed to put it up against a Porsche GT3 on the Barber track. The Porsche beat it around the track by .53 of a second. The test driver noted that the Porsche was only able to out run the Camaro because of the straight away. The Porsche was able to hit a 6mph higher top speed on the straight, and the Camaro was easy to manage in the corners while the Porsche took much more effort to keep under control.

Lol, it wouldn't. The tires would probably get bridle and crack. Chevy Stops shipment of the ZL1 and 1LE cars because tires become bridle in temperatures below 25 degrees. They keep them at the plant until the weather is warm enough to ship.

The Z/28 uses completely different tires, but considering they were designed for a race series, (I think the Porsche Cup, but not sure) I can't imagine they would hold up any better then the others.

I do tend to exaggerate a bit, but it did beat it out buy a good margin.

Here you go. one of the other magazines managed to get ahold of a Porsche GT3. The GT3 managed to get around the track in 5/10s of a second faster, but the driver noted that it was only because of the straight away. The GT3 was hitting 6mph higher speed on the straight.

For me the most impressive part is that GM has said the warranty will cover the car under track use. I don't know of any other car that as that kind of coverage.
