seeking "Saabaru" info

I've been offered a deal on a 2005 Saab 9-2 wagon, 2.5 (EJ-?) non-turbo, 4-speed auto. Seventy-something thousand miles. A gussied-up Impreza. Anybody familiar with this platform/powertrain who could relate common issues? Thanks.

If you buy it you will then feel the need to also buy a gray tweed sport coat with tan leather elbow patches, smoke a pipe and,
gasp,
TALK ABOUT YOUR FEELINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think they're cool. Basically an impreza, but with a lot less ugly. I'm also pretty sure there is a massive amount of parts compatibility with the subaru versions, which can only be a good thing.

Re: seeking "Saabaru" info

Yeah, the guy who owns it has had a couple of Outbacks and an Outback Sport since I've known him, and I told him this is easily the best looking of the lot. Pretty sharp. Leather, heated seats, 6-CD stereo, electrically-adjustable fog lamps, etc.

The offer came up just yesterday and I've not had time to do a bit of research or serious pondering; just wondering it there are any major known issues for which I should be on the lookout. Tissue-paper head gaskets, that sort of thing. Man, I wish it was a five-speed manual.

Another negative: It's from Michigan and it shows. Vowed I'd never own another Salt Belt car.

Thanks for the input.

Saabaru at the Subaru Auto X several years ago...

Check with the NASIOC guys. They might be able to help answer your questions.

Re: seeking "Saabaru" info

As with any N/A 2.5, watch out for head gasket problems. Literally 90% of the 2.5 Subarus at the auto auction are there because they have blown head gaskets. It seems like they never really got it under control, because lately i've been seeing 06's and 07's with the problem.

Guess the head gasket in a can didn't solve it.

Re: seeking "Saabaru" info

like they said its a impreza with a new nose. The 2.5L turbo version is quite rare as it arrived very late and right before Saab killed the model off. 2L turbo and 2.5L non-turbo are far more common.

I worked on a 2L turbo and the suspension seemed tuned kinda strange and the gear ratios were not what I was used to.

Re: seeking "Saabaru" info

I really liked the look of this car and came mighty close, but passed. Decided if I'm gonna have a car payment, whatever I get is going to have a warranty. I shudder to think of a monthly note AND big-ticket repair on the same car.
