Well my birthday (today) pretty much SUCKED!
Decided to take the Mt Hood Scenic Loop with my girlfriend (pretty much the same drive we took last year with the SVX group, except we went up SR14 and crossed over at Hood River) but since my SVX was down in Albany at my parents house, we decided to take her Corolla (front wheel drive 3AT) since it gets way better mileage than my truck. Made it up there just fine but on the way back, about 3 miles outside of Sandy on 26 one of the rods decided it was tired of being inside the engine... Funny thing is, it still ran! It started making noise, then it clunked and the noise went away (she thought she picked up a stick or something) then it started losing power so she pulled off. I checked it didn't see anything, decided to see how far we could go.. Got up to the top of the hill and it started making noise again, then made a loud clunk and just started POURING smoke, limped in into Shorty's gas station and sat there for 2 hours until her mom came and got us lol... (They tried to get a tow dolly but all U-Hauls dollies has inoperative lights, go figure) so they came and got us, we ended up taking my truck, got a dolly, drove out there and got it and drove back to Vancouver... So now I need to find a wrecked Corolla (preferably a 5 speed GT-S) to yank the engine out of... Or find someone who wants to buy a good shell (Everything else is in good shape, it has like one dent lol)

Re: Well my birthday (today) pretty much SUCKED!
I had a '78 Celica once upon a time. I was driving 3 hours from State College PA, about halfway home, when the engine started losing power. I had to push the gas further and further down to keep the car moving. Finally I pulled over to see what was wrong. No oil! A pinhole leak had opened up in the front cover, pumping all all the oil out. I put a few quarts in and drove it home. Got the leak fixed, drove it for another 50K. It never was *quite* the same after 30 minutes at highway speeds with no oil in the crankcase, but I'm not complaining.

Re: Well my birthday (today) pretty much SUCKED!
I got a good one I took my 1983 Subaru GL wagon to Canada. We were driving through Ottawa when we heard a bang, and then we saw smoke like a ton of it. They were teasing me that all the bugs were now dead in Canada . Well we drove it home 350 miles . Took it to the shop. Found that the Distributor Bushing failed and the rotor was flopping all over the place. it must have fired # 3 when it should have fired #4 because we had a big hole in the piton . When he checked compression there was none . We replaced the motor. I had a lot of respect for Subaru that day. It was like a dead horse getting me back home before it dies . That must be the limp home feature

Re: Well my birthday (today) pretty much SUCKED!
Yeah I really would have been if it was my SVX... Tristan is a little miffed but she is happy to drive my truck until I can find her a new car :-P Time to get her a Subaru! The 'Rolla still runs though, I drove it onto the dolly and back off, it won't idle and sprays oil out the front of the engine, but it runs! Tempted to buy some of that epoxy putty stuff, patch the hole, put oil in it and see how long it will go :-P

Re: Well my birthday (today) pretty much SUCKED!
i used jb weld epoxy on the oil pan for my first car, 86 mercury topaz, and it ran for years with it on there. seeped a little but no more than a quart between changes. i was quite impressed considering the size of whole i had to patch.
