Re: Salutations - need help with starting problem

Merry Christmas Will!

Sorry about your problem. I found this form several years ago and in the past I received great assistance from outstanding people that were also knowledgeable people... here to help!

Time changes everything, and for a variety of reasons, most have moved on.

After reading over the reply's on this thread a couple of times, I would highly recommend that you do yourself a favor and get your car to a dealer and get it checked out...

Be specific about just diagnosing the failure to start. Probably would charge one hour labor.

This is exactly what I would do.

I agree fully, cranks/no start can be the worst PITA to diag yourself.... and you can sometimes make it worse depending on what you do to test it.

I wouldnt worry about the crank pulley as of yet, that wouldnt be a problem with this condition. Just pay the dealer to diag it and then you can decide if you want to do it yourself or not. Given the fact it has done this twice before exactly the same leads me to believe its electrical, which can be hell to track down sometimes.

Re: Salutations - need help with starting problem

Will, Just to be clear, you have ascertained spark, air and fuel? You say the motor cranks so it appears your battery and starter are OK.Are all your sensor connections tight, clean etc? I like to make sure I've ruled out the most obvious before going to a dealer. My guess about the o2 code is it was stored in memory and has been there before this problem and shouldn't have any affect on starting anyway. But i may be wrong. If your getting air, spark and fuel my next step would be timing barring any sensor malfunctions.Good luck at any rate and let us know what it turns out to be.

Re: Salutations - need help with starting problem

Thanks for all the input gents. Very excited to be a part of this forum! I'm going to give the sensors a good cleaning before I have no other choice but to tow up to the dealership. : / The last time I was there they quoted me $450 to replace the valve cover gaskets. Our how-to doc made this a two hour job for me, having minimal mechanical experience. I was hoping to have the same results with my current issue, but enough is enough. I'll keep you all posted. I don't know if you all get bored by repeating this type of info with us newbies, but as for me I can't thank you enough!

Re: Salutations - need help with starting problem

My suggestion was not to let the dealer actually do the job!!

The quote would be all you would need!

Re: Salutations - need help with starting problem

450.00 for cam cover gaskets is way to much even if that includes the parts. If you can swing a ratchet you can do this yourself. Like keith say's dealer only as a last resort.

Re: Salutations - need help with starting problem

Exactly! Service manager told me in person that It would be 225 per side. That's just in labor, I told him I already had rocker gaskets/oil separator gaskets. Needless to say I walked out immediately. The problem is that there are no other subaru specialist in this county, probably the whole state from what I've been told. I'm not at all looking forward to towing back to these people, having diag ran, then towing back home. At all!! But I have to get my baby back on the road.

Re: Salutations - need help with starting problem

don't go to dealers for the service, unless you HAVE to. they gave me a quote of $1100 to replace both wheel bearings. i already had the wheel bearings in a box in my back seat. that was only labor. took it down the street to the SubeShop (some subaru mechanic place) and got the job done for $315. dealers, me no likes you. :]

So how did this turn out? Did you find the source of the problem?

Re: Salutations - need help with starting problem

First off nikfu, long live Carl Sagan. I have not yet gotten to the source of my problem. However I have found a subi "specialist" (besides the dealership) which I am excited to give a chance to show and prove by diagnosing this problem. As money is an issue today, results will be SOON! I am anxious to hear the results of your current problem, I am having some of the same symptoms.

Re: Salutations - need help with starting problem

So after an agonizing past few weeks without by baby,I had it towed to the shop today. Low and behold, I have a shot Fuel Pump. :\ Which really sucks considering the damn thing was replaced less than 20k (3yrs) ago. Is this unheard of? Anywho, $500 for oem parts and labor (including new filter)which sounds ok since there is no way I would even consider delving into that task after reading about explosions and such on here.Does that price seem unreasonable?

Considering I did mine myself in my garage a couple weeks ago at 4am, no.

Re: Salutations - need help with starting problem

Did you take it to fairway or an independent shop?

Re: Salutations - need help with starting problem

Noooo, not fairway. Although they are good about ordering parts for me. I'm trying this independent shop called Just Right auto. Went with a friend of mine who owns a 84' Porsche 944(with 28 thousand original miles btw) to his mechanic at Protech a few days ago and the mechanic recommended this shop to me for subarus, as he knows a "subaru guru". I've got my fingers crossed on this one. Dude seemed straight up and the whole shop went bonkers over my car. I figured $150 in labor wasn't too shabby considering oem fuel pump costs $320 + another 20 for a new filter, decided 500 would work for me.
