Accesory Belt broke, car stopped running. Need quick answer.

My dad was on his way to work this morning at 4:30AM, and the accessory belt broke on him. He said that it stopped running, but I don't know if stopped running right away.

I've read that people have ran their svx without an alternator belt. But my dads SVX stopped running. Is there a chance that no alternator for a short time means the engine won't run?

I'm just worried that something else might of went. The car is on the side of the road and we're going to try to put on a new belt before we tow it home. Advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

If the battery was weak to begin with, it might not run. If not, it could run for a little while but not very long. The car has alot of accessories and will suck the battery dry pretty quick. If you install a new belt, you will most likely have to jump start the car's battery to get going again. Might want to have the battery tested to see how much life it has left in it.

Last night my dad and I drove over to where the car was sitting on the side of the road.

We replaced the belt that had broken, the alternator, PS belt. Turn it over and it won't start at all. Didn't even show a sign of almost starting.

We check for a spark on on #2 spark plug (the one in front, pass side) and it had a good spark. And then we checked if there was fuel by removing and injector and the fuel pump worked good.

When the belt broke, my dad said the he thinks that the car was running because he said he still saw rpm's. Aproxx. 30 seconds. So he coasted to the side of the road in DRIVE. Could that have possibly done something?

Question is, where do I start to look?

Significant Technical Input Registered SVX
Put a known good battery in it and try it again....sounds dumb, but try it.

Also check the fusable link in the fuse box under the hood.

The one we had in there still cranked it over pretty strong, But I will try a different one later today.

I took a look at the fusible link in the fuse box, and its just an insulated jumper wire.

That's what the fusable link is....make sure ther is current at both ends of it.

I tried a good battery and it didn't help.

I checked the current between the two fusible link terminals, and it was about 5-6 amps with the ingnition on "ON". The link is good too.

I took off the intake pipe, and sprayed some starter spray into the throttle body with the butterfly's open, no luck also.

An egine needs 3 things to run, Fire Fuel & Compression. Spraying starter fluid in eliminated fuel as a problem, as it failed to even try to fire with a false fuel source.
Pull a spark plug wire, stick a screwdriver in the end of it, then place it next to some metal, but not touching. have someone crank the car over while you look for spark. (redneck fire test)
When you crank it, does it spin freely, or kinda chug chug.
Another way to see what Im getting at is to turn the engine over by the new accessory belt by hand. (key off of course) It should feel tight loose tight, as it turns over. (redneck compression check)
If either of these fail, it's time to start doing some in depth checking with the proper equipment.

I found the problem.

Timing skipped 4 teeth. Probably because my dad coasted to the side of the road in DRIVE instead of NEUTRAL.

Haven't fixed it yet, but no doubt thats the problem. I couldn't get the engine to start with one or two tooths off once. Thanks for the help!

Thanks for the closure on this thread.

I have heard that sometimes when a belt breaks it can jamed under other belts that are still good. so if the PS belt broke it make have got pulled into the the AC belt and that may have given the engine a torque spike. You see the the ac belt in this case have to stretch a ways to get that broken belt to go around a pulley. That would require some engine torque. Always best to replaced cracked belts.
