running with compressor off

i had my a/c compressor rebuilt last year (dont ask me why i did) and have a warranty which is still good. however, the mechanic at the shop told me that i wouldn't be able to run the car with the compressor and compressor belt off the car. i dont believe this is true. the pulley has been changed to the one piece/lightened at motorsport. and i'd prefer to still drive the car while the compressor is in...re-rebuild.
would there be any damage/problems with running the car with the compressor and compressor belt off?

Just make sure the hoses are tied down from flopping around.

Yeah, you should have no problem running without a compressor. A lot of Legacy guys remove theirs because they don't need them or want them. You can even use the stock crank pulley. In your case, do what was said above;

Remove compressor
Tie down tubes
Cover them so they don't inhale anything
Remove accessory belt

Just be careful that you don't try to turn on the A/C system or bad things could happen (ie. don't use the auto temp system and don't turn on the defrost).

Significant Technical Input
What the heck would that hurt?? Just because the compressor field goes bad (hypothetically) the rest of the system should go up in smoke?

How would turning the A/C on or defrost on with the compressor/belt removed cause harm?

thanks for the input guys

The compressor is the heart of the system, without it nothing else works (in the A/C system). Nothing should happen if you use the climate controls, mechanically speaking.
