overheating

was coming home from Reading(great fun)and I noticed the temp gage hit the red and then it dropped down and it keep doing this the whole way home. Whats that about?? The radiator wasn't steaming hot or anything, is this normal? I do have some tranny issues(really bad leak) could that have been the problem?

Could be a sticky thermostat or air in your cooling system.

open your rad cap and run the car to normal operating temp. Keep adding until it is full.
