I've previously posted this on Yahoo, but I wanted to put it here also so anyone could find it using the search engine here.

Okay everyone, I've changed my PCV valve. Since none of us ever seems to have done it, I took pics and notes for instructions. Here's the instructions.

The Subaru part number is 11810AA000. I don't know how much it costs, sorry. Hastings part # is HV44.

1. Purchase a 19mm crow's foot. See it in my pics. $6.50 at a local wholesale tool store. http://albums.photopoint.com/j/View?...459&Sequence=0

2. Remove the center cover on the intake manifold. It takes a 4mm allen wrench. http://albums.photopoint.com/j/View?...475&Sequence=0

http://albums.photopoint.com/j/View?...495&Sequence=0

3. Pull the hose off and remove the valve.
-Hot tip #1- You are actually unscrewing the
valve upside down. Set your ratchet as if
you were trying to tighten something.
-Hot tip #2- I was going to say "don't drop
the crow's foot under the manifold, it's
a bear to get it out". After dropping it
three times, my new tip is "secure the
crow's foot to the extension so you won't
drop it". I used some electrical tape,
since I'm out of duct tape. If you have one, you could use a magnetic tipped retrieval tool. http://albums.photopoint.com/j/View?...464&Sequence=0

4. Install the new one. Once
again, be careful not to drop it. I was able
to start threading it by reaching in from the
driver's side, towards the back of the engine,
under the manifold. It was a tight fit, but
easier than trying to start it from the top.
5. I also pulled the hose out and cleaned it while
I had everything apart. The hose was stiff
enough that I was able to push it back on the
valve by pushing on the other end of the hose,
where it attaches to the splitter, which you
can see in one of the photos.

I think that may be it. If anybody has any questions, just ask. It sounds easier typing it out than doing it, although I could do it better a second time.

Good luck, and have fun!-
Rich

I could make it so images were allowed, but I am afraid modem users might hate me if I did. I figgure, post a link and that way they can choose to view instead of forcing the issue. I could be wrong though.

No sweat, Chris! I just didn't realize it until after I had put in all the [img] thingies, and posted. I just went back in and removed them. It says it right up there above where I'm posting, "[IMG] code is OFF". I just need to learn how to pay attention.

What were we talking about?-

although i have DSL, i agree with your decision to not include images within the text.
the extra download time isn't worth the hassle when you can simply click on the link.

Question

What are the symptoms of a clogged/blocked PVC valve?

I'm wondering if I should change mine....

Thanks

I'm not 100% sure that there are any real symptons. The dipstick on my SVX kept popping up. Since it had about 90K miles on it, and I wasn't sure it had been done, I figured it might be due. Since it's a Positive Crankcase Ventilation valve, I thought maybe it was stuck, causing the crankcase pressure to build and force the dipstick out of the tube. I'm not sure if it could contribute to a rough idle, or maybe an excessive amount of oil film in the intake, or exactly what. I think it's more of an emmissions device than anything. Somebody with more knowledge may be able to help.

Did the PCV valve replacement fix this? I thought the dipstick thing was just an SVX quirk or particular to my car.

Just a thought on the rough idle. Have you cleaned your throttle body lately? A good rule of thumb is to clean it at every other oil change. I've had rough idles and even stalling (on other cars). A good cleaning of the throttle body has cleared it right up. And it's one of the cheaper "fixes" -- plus, if it doesn't clear up the problem, it's probably something you should have done anyway. Again, just a thought.

Yes, at the time I thought that it had fixed it. Mine never popped up again in the remaining six months or so that I owned the car. But, I seem to recall others changing their PCV valves, and still having the dipstick problem. So, I wouln't want to proclaim this as a sure-fire fix to the dipstick popping up. I did seem to fix mine, however. It's been about a year now since I sold it to John Shotsky, maybe if you ever run into him on one of these club things you can ask him how it's doing?

The only idle problem mine had was an occassional 'hiccup', or slight stutter, at idle. Like when you're sitting at a traffic light waiting for it to change. It was almost imperceptable, but there nonetheless. I never did get that to go completely away, even after cleaning the throttle body, and fuel treatment, and PCV valve replacement. Others have noted it too, and I'm not sure anybody has found a solid fix for it. Although now I'd guess that a new Oxygen sensor would be the fix.

I've been "having fun" for the past hour, but the darn thing won't budge!

Who ever replaced this last must have tightened it with a 50 foot wrench

If you are doing it like I did it, you have to remember that to remove the PCV, you need to set your socket wrench as if you are tightening something. That's because you are actually trying to loosen it 'backwards', so to speak. I originally did the same thing, and couldn't figure out why it wouldn't budge. I hope this helps.

Dipstick

Henry- people have had success by buying a package of assorted rubber O-rings, and picking the right size to replace the one that's at the top of the dipstick. That way, they've got a good snug fit again, and it stays down. I always thought that mine had a pretty tight fit, and that to make it tighter wasn't really addressing the problem. Apparently though, some of them just drop into the tube with little resistance.

yeah my dip stick has pretty good resistence wheni push it in. Im baffled as to why it gets pushed out. Too much ard driving and backpressure of motor oil?
FIlled up too much?
