4 FEAT transmission from a Legacy in an SVX ??
The 4 FEAT automatic was also used in the 90-94 Legacy....
Does anyone know if a tranny out of a Legacy can be used in the SVX. I have a good one in a Legacy I'm going to part out. Warren C. |

Yep, it will work.

That's true, but you could also argue that the SVX tranny is more prone to failure!

Bolt UP ??
Beefier ....how??
Is it a direct bolt up swap? Warren C. |

Re: Bolt UP ??
From my understanding, the SVX 4EAT's gears are stronger to handle the bigger torque load produced by our engines.

It will bolt right up. The differences are in the clutch packs. The SVX simply has more. This in part adds to the SVX transmission overheating issues, that is why Dave said it is more prone to failure.
And different gear ratios. You would need to change the ring and pinion in the SVX to match the legacy.

impreza tranny works too
I swapped out a 96 Impreza with 4.11 gears. I used the svx torque converter too. It is bigger/beefer. I have had no problem with the tranny, speedo speed seem correct too.

As for durability, I wouldn't expect it to last any longer. The reason the SVX's tranny fails is that it's undercooled. If you put in a new tranny, but don't improve the cooling, you're just going to run into the same problems. That, combined with the less beefy clutches, doesn't bode well for the Legacy tranny in the SVX. I'm sure if you babied it, you could make it last for a pretty long time. But it's not an even swap for a real SVX tranny.

Rear of the front differential, the SVX and turbo Legacy tranny's are the same. I just did the reverse- I put an SVX transmission in my turbo Legacy wagon. The final drives are different in all three variants and the ratios are different between turbo and non-turbo Legacy's.
Here's the thread for better descriptions and differences between SVX's and turbo and non-turbo Legacy's: http://www.subaru-svx.net/forum/show...threadid=18646 If you search, there are another thread or two discussing this further. -Mark |
