SVX shuts down midway through turn!
This afternoon, I was making a full lock turn in my SVX when the engine died, without warning, leaving all the warning lights illuminated...I turned it off and then restarted it and it was fine.
Needless to say, it has scared the wits of of money as I can imagine a giant monster from FHI creeping up on me, a monster that likes $$$$$$ Any thoughts? Thanks James

My cavalier does this from time to time. My thought was that its because of the power steering pump needing too much "power" from the accessory pully, thus stalling the engine. Thats just my theory though, and it has always kept me happy.

Not the steering pump to be sure.
How much lateral force was being generated ! ? Could there have been enough to make something move and create a break in an electrical circuit ? Possibly main battery connections, loose connector etc. Shove everything about that you can put your hands on with the engine running in an effort to duplicate the fault.

James,
Check your primary connections to the alternator and make a note to have it's function checked when you get service. Roasting a sacrifice to the SVX gods wouldn't hurt either. Boone |

Doc, it hurts when I...
In addition...
I suppose if you were running close to empty and cornering hard, you may have starved the engine for fuel. That may be clutching at straws, but it is possible. You may need to clean the throttle body as it has an 'idle up' motor that can plug up. If you were turning at full lock and foot off the gas, the potential for stalling is there. The p/s employs a pressure switch that signals the ECU to increase the idle when the pressure is running high, such as it will when at full lock. If the idle up passage is clogged it could stall. The same goes for your Cav, Mike.

I agree with Beav it is the idle control valve not responding quick enough, to pick up the idle speed to handle the pump load. Most likley a bit gummed up. Keep smiling James. Harvey.

Thanks guys...I'll have to get it attended to. Is it expensive/urgent to address (I hardly drive the car...say 250km per week).
The car was 1/2 fuel of fuel (I think that is also inaccurate!! but seems to be the story with the 92's) and there was say 5% throttle was doing about 10kph. At least I can be stressed out of my mind and clutching my wallet in the company of like-minded and like-suffering souls! *raises glass to the SVX Stress and Spending Brigade....CHEERS*

It is interesting that you say that you had some throttle on and were therefore above idle.
Perhaps it would be wise to hold off spending money with some doubtfull expert until you do some more trial runs and provide more details to Beav and Harvey.

James - Did you try to do it again? I mean same speed, same road, same turn? If it won't die again, I suggest a gremlin was at work the first time. He's probably moved on by now.
Ron.

Damn gremlins!! Probably one of those possessed Ompa-Lumpa's.....
I have not driven it since but will go back and try again this weekend - once I have the Auto Assistance (NRMA) paid up so they can come and get me if the gremlin brings its friends along!! *crossing fingers* James

James,
I remember a member who had a curious engine cutout while making left turns. Then he found out his battery was not mounted down, and it slid and hit the cam sensor or something causing it. Definitely reaching here... Of course, maybe the car will prove to be problematic, and I WOULD be willing to take it off your hands if/when I decide to migrate back... VK |
