It's absolutely not true at the tire company I work at. The OEM's are made identically to the replacement market tires. The OEM's have the strictest tolerances for uniformity (balance, vlcc, conicity, etc. ) An OEM market tire is held to a higher standard (center cut from normal production) to encourage customers to be repeat customers.
Making your OEM tire a crappy tire in relation to the replacement is only going to make you lose customer loyalty.

Some more interesting information: OEM is not where we make money. The replacement market is. When choosing between the many development contracts for OEM each year the replacement market is a huge consideration. Customer loyalty and demographic as it pertains to the type/class of car being purchased is also a major factor when choosing which contract to bid on. For example, why would you spend a bunch of R&D money on a great tire for a kia rio when you know the customer is going to put on a cheap set of chinese tires as soon as the OE's are worn to the threads. You spend the money on a BMW where you can be pretty sure the owner isn't going to downgrade to a cheaper brand when the time comes. You definitely don't put an inferior tire on the OEM or you are digging your own grave.
This makes a lot more sense to me. I've never heard of OEM tires being made to a lesser standard.

The OG factory tires were so bad, i had to get the DWS's before i got snow tires. Had the Contis on for about a month, and i just put some Blizzaks on some new wheels and put them on the car a few days ago. It was 70 degrees out today.

I have michelin pilot sports on my a6 in the summer, and blizzaks in the winter. I run all seasons on the s8 because my partner drives it, and only to work about 3 miles from the house, so it's really not justified. I commute to erie (about 90 miles round trip) every day through the heaviest part of the snow belt.

Re: suggestions for cars that are under $10,000?

The original Goodyear Wrangler ATS tires on the Durango lasted to 110k miles. Replaced with some crappy Bridgestone dueller HT that didn't make it 40k miles. We're going to go for some General AT2's.

Oh, I guess we're not talking about truck tires

speaking of truck tires... if you get the LT tires instead of P they will last way longer. ride like crap and be noisy but they are a lot better tires.

They don't make 265/70 tires in passenger type

Gak! Went to school in Erie - i understand.

I get out of work at midnight, so the roads are pretty much unplowed/unsalted if its snowing, plus theres a few hills to contend with.

AT2's are what I am looking at for my f150... They should handle the upcoming hunting season pretty well

Re: suggestions for cars that are under $10,000?

I don't recall where I read the big writeup on the tire industry. Maybe its changed, but at least then, yes, they did do custom molds for car makers. Ford needs 1/2 a million tires for one of thier lesser selling models. Fseries might used several different sizes and brands, but I'd bet everyone of them is over a 1/4 million tires needed by Ford for just thier fullsize trucks. Clearly some tire makers do very specific tuning of the tire design which is why you see "porsche" or "BMW" fitments separate from the normal tire in that size and model.

We have also seen in past reports of things like the aftermarket RE92 was markedly better than the OEM RE92 subaru inflicted on thier cars. Still not worth buying but better.

Much of the "better" in aftermarket vs OEM if not all of it is in the more expensive rubber compounds and proper manufacturing. There is a reason that $25 pepboys/chinese tires are worthless even if you manage to find one with the same exact tread design as a high end tire. The shallower tread is just there to make it cheaper, and to wear out faster so the owner has to buy new tires sooner. I think its a mistake since people who think it through will buy a more expenisve tire that lasts longer... and if the OEM is gone quickly.. why would anyone think to buy it again.
