Whats the story with recalling 92s?

Is it true I can get more filters on my transmission if they aren't there? ANd that Subaru will pay for it? Or does it have to be under warranty?

Filters

Yes the 92 did have a retrofitted external filter. If you have it it should be right behind the radiator area where the atf hoses go in. Take your plastic bottom cover of and take a good look. If its not there call the Subaru 1-800 number or send them an email. Explain that you just bought the car give them the vin and tell them you just wanted to register it with them (in case of any later recalls) and would like to find out if there are any recalls that haven't been done to the car. If they say no then tell them that you heard that the 92 was retrofitted with a filter and that yours doesn't have it. They may let you get one but from what I remember other posts was that it wasn't a mandatory recall but rather a goodwill recall. That was also 8 years ago at least so I wouldn't think they would have to honor it.

If they don't want to honor it go get yourself an aftermarket set-up. Its cheaper and the filter (which is just a fram model number is cheaper too). try www.summitracing.com. They're real good at getting you the stuff you need and helpful on the install. I got my cooler and digital tranny temp gauge through them.

The filter (which includes hoses and hardware) is available from the dealer or subaruparts.com for around ten bucks. It was part of a TSB and would have to be under warranty to get it fitted for free.

Cash,

There was a special TSB to add an external ATF filter on 92's & 93's. I think it expired about 1 1/2 to 2 years ago. Your local subie dealer may honor it for free. If not, I suggest that you get an aftermarket ATF filter. I think one model has a connection for a temp. gage. Good Luck.

If the filter recall wasn't done, you may want to check that the fuel filler/cap recall and the Wireing recall were also done.

There was a vacume problem with the filler. The wireing recall rerouted power through different fuses . Sometimes you'd have power drops when signal lights and/or wipers were used with a/c & headlights on if I remember correctly. Then there was the front strut warranty replacement deal to 'quiet' the thumping in the front end cased in conjuction with the floating calipers. (It did quiet but to the detriment of handleing in my opinion.)

I'm not familiar with this wiring recall. Do you have any more info on this? A quick search didn't return any info.

Come to think about it...what's this about the fuel filler recall?

I never heard about a wiring or a gas cap recall.
Please elaborate.

The only TSBs I know of for 92's & 93's are for the struts, ATF filter, and dashboard creaking.

My 97 dashboard still creaks like stones are hitting the windshield. Is it too late or worthwile to get that fixed?

checkout TSB summaries

TSB summaries can be found at Edmunds.com

http://www.edmunds.com/products/maintguide/index.html

They don't list details, but the summaries should help a little. I just found a TSB that applies to my other car. Now I just need to convince the dealer to fix it for free. If anyone knows where to find full text TSBs for free, please let me know.

Matt

Here's the TSB for the 92's. I would have thought that the problem was fixed on the 97's.

Come to think about it...what's this about the fuel filler recall?
I pulled my old repair records but can't find any specific ref. All I found was a warranty repair in Aug of 93 where the gas cap was replaced. I had not asked for this and distinctly remember that Subaru had the dealer do the replacement due to some sort of seal problem which caused a vacume in the fuel system that affected fuel flow (or lack of)

Same for the rewire. Oct 93. Took my car in for regular service and found it wasn't ready when I went to pick it up. The mechanic was lying on the driver's side floor soldering wires to reroute electrics. I still have the mark in my floor mat where he dropped the soldering iron.

Next time I'm at the dealer I'll ask if they still have the info from Subaru.
