Thumping when backing up while turning

I have a thumping noise while backing up in a turn. It may be a "binding" noise. I have a bad ball joint on the front drivers side. Has anyone else had this problem.

Re: Thumping when backing up while turning

Is it coming from the rear tires or from the front end? If it's coming from the front, it could be your ball joint or something else. If it's coming from the rear, mainly the inside tire in the turn, then it is binding up a bit. Hope that helps. Maybe you can narrow it down.

It is coming from the rear. I notice it while backing up in a sharp turn, and yes it does sound like the inside tire. Do these cars do this or is it a problem. It is sort of like a 4x4 truck in a slow sharp turn but it doesnt buck as bad, just a little thump.

Yeah, then it is just binding up a little bit. It may be that the transfer clutches need to be worn in a little bit yet. Try doing slow/tight figure 8's in a parking lot, and see if it does it going forward as well. It may help free things up.

Increasing speed while doing the figure 8's while maintaining full steering lock was what my mechanic advised. He told me they often do it as part of the pre-delivery routine on new cars. Usually caused by the car sitting too long. It's usually nothing to worry about, unless it won't go away.

Yep, same process for a rebuild/reman transmission going in. They just need to get used properly and literally "worn-in".

Could also be the rear diff bushings, mine does the same thing, and if you put it in 1 or 2 and run it up to about 4k RPM and then back out of it (engine braking) it will make the same noise.
