Re: A specific question about the old "dipstick popping out" issue

Sounds similar to the number 6 spark plug.

Re: A specific question about the old "dipstick popping out" issue

So once all the seals have gone, how much would it cost to get them replaced? I am pretty sure my seals are gone due to this, but I don't know if I can trust myself to do the work correctly. I am worried it is going to cost too much to where I can keep this. I wish I would have known this was the problem before I saw 4 oil spots under my car.

Re: A specific question about the old "dipstick popping out" issue

I wonder if the cam shaft seals really fail due to PCV valve. I believe they should not since valve cover on both sides are ventilated seperately. Also: If they are intact, they should work fine once overpressure cannot build up anymore due (after valve replacement).

The seals fail due to age/wear. I replaced all 5 in the front. Its basically a timing belt replacement taking some minor steps further. Plenty of exelent information on this forum on this topic, yust use the search function. (Helped me through it all the way).
You will find the parts needed listed in a thread. I don´t recall prices, but if you do it all (which you should) my guess its about 300$ in parts and several hours of work.

Re: A specific question about the old "dipstick popping out" issue

I checked the dipstick today and it hadn't popped up after about 6 days of driving. Makes me really think it is an o-ring issue as I would expect a bad PCV to have popped it back out by now. Also, my engine oil levels are really good and there are no signs of leaks anywhere. And the oil looks great too. Still looks very clean after nearly 3K miles. I was happy to see that. Now if I could only solve the cold start bouncy idle and front end rattles.

Re: A specific question about the old "dipstick popping out" issue

Well I tackled the PCV valve today. Wow I did not expect that to be that bad. It seems that my car is already smoking less. Maybe a good sign that it was my main problem.

Re: A specific question about the old "dipstick popping out" issue

Do we need to use the black Nitrile o-rings for the dipstick or are the green HNBR o-rings OK? It seems like the HNBR o-rings maintain their properties over larger temperature extremes and I "think" they are resistant to engine oil.

the dipstick pops out because there is a lot of pressure in the crank case.
pcv is just part of it

Either of them should work fine. The main thing is to get one with flex and not a hard brittle one.

Re: A specific question about the old "dipstick popping out" issue

Apparently, these o-rings are quite useful. They retain their properties from -30C to 150C. They don't lose their properties from prolonged exposure to high or low temperatures. They are resistant to petroleum oils. Here is what I found:

HNBR – Hydrogenated Nitrile Butadiene Rubber

HNBR is widely known for its physical strength and retention of properties after long-term exposure to heat, oil, and chemicals. Depending on filler selection and loading, HNBR compounds typically have tensile strengths of 20 - 31 MPa when measured at 23°C. The unique properties attributed to HNBR have resulted in wide adoption of HNBR in automotive, industrial, and assorted, performance-demanding applications. On a volume basis, the automotive market is the largest consumer, using HNBR for a host of dynamic and static seals, hoses, and belts. HNBR has also been widely employed in industrial sealing for oil field exploration and processing, as well as rolls for steel and paper mills.

I found a nice assortment on ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/270pc...motiveQ5fTools

Maybe I will bring a few to the meet next year.

Re: A specific question about the old "dipstick popping out" issue

Probably too much. i imagine they would remove your intake manifold, so you will need all new seals. They will most likely tell you your vacuum hoses are brittle and need changed.

If you do it yourself, it will be much much cheaper.

I took an old wrench and cut and wielded it to have the right angle needed to do the job.

A wielding shop can do it for just a few $ I suspect.

Re: A specific question about the old "dipstick popping out" issue

Gosh, if it was me, I would look in the How-To Documents and see if there is anything in there about it.

Well, there it is - How to Change the PCV Valve.

Just because your Dipstick was out, doesn't mean that you need to change the PCV Valve. It could be as simple as changing the O-Ring on the dipstick. If it pops out after changing the O-Ring, then you can change the PCV valve.

Your first choice for finding how to do things on your SVX should be the How-To Documents! Good Luck.

PVC (pronounced pee-VEE-see) Polymerized Vinyl Chloride. Pipes used in plumbing

Not to be confused with PCV (pronounced pee-SEE-vee) Abbreviation for Positive Crankcase Ventilation. Used in automotive emissions systems

Unless significant obstacles are overcome, these two parts are NOT interchangeable
