my mom really wants the FXT, and after i settle the housing situation, i may go big and buy one. i'll probably opt for the legacy sedan though and save 3 large.

Spend $100 bucks for an eye doctor visit first then drive to the stuck pedalship and pick up a camry 6cyl for $24k. Plenty of money left over to lift that haha.

Ron,

A Coronet is too much of a 'gas guzzler'.
My Maroon Dodge Dart w/ slant six & Torqueflite is just right for the greening of America.

Re: Subaru launches 2011 Mediocrity marketing campaign

From my point of view Subaru is just doing what SAAB did. SAAB quit selling quirky cars and moved into the boring mainstream. That is where the money and main sales are. However, Toyota, Ford, Honda, Chevy, and soon Hundai, have the bulk of the mainstream market sewn up with just some crumbs falling to Mitsubishi, Subaru, Kia, Chrysler, etc.

Auto companies are in business to make a lot of money. That is why they don't cater to people on the fringe, like us.

Re: Subaru launches 2011 Mediocrity marketing campaign

I saw the new STi sedan at the gas station yesterday. It was wearing Illinois Manufacturer plates, but I'm not sure if they're on sale yet. I got a pic of it but it's stuck on this stupid phone until I get another computer running. The guy driving it was pretty cool and we talked about Subaru's current lineup while we both filled up. Seems to me like they're banking all of their sales on brand loyalty from folks like us (remember the Forester campaign where people were getting a replacement for their old Forester). Aside from that the only car likely to bring in new customers is the new STi, but even this guy thought the GC was the best generation Impreza and they've been going downhill since the introduction of the bugeye. I'll be a Subaru fanboy 'till I die, but I'll have to qualify that with "pre-Y2K Subarus" because I'm not a fan of anything they're doing today. The last year's big changes were a disgusting break in tradition for those of us who've been loyal for years. I'd understand if the new GIANT Legacys were bringing in new customers, but I don't think that they are.

I agree somewhat with this, however, you're missing the key difference. Like Saab, Subaru had a "cult" like following of people who didn't look for anything else when it was time to replace their cars. Sure, that translated into 2-300k sales in the US from the early 80s thru the mid to lat 90s but it also cost them a heck of a lot to sell their cars (i.e. less advertising, less need for redesigns to try to keep up with the big boys, etc.) While today Subaru is selling about 100k more vehicle then the 80s and 90s, they also have a lot more expenses to sell that many more so I'd be very suprised if they are making even the same amount of profits as they did 20 years ago. Give it another 5 years of their current linecrap and those like me who thought I'd buy Subarus until I die steadily multiply and leave the marque in droves. As you said, all you need to do is look at Saab.

Re: Subaru launches 2011 Mediocrity marketing campaign

Honestly until Subaru (designs and sells) another coupe I could care less about what Subaru is selling new. What kind of car company doesn't even offer a coupe??? I love the mechanicals of a Subaru but they are not offering a car that I can truly get excited about.

Why's that Sean, every other Subaru coupe has weighed more than the sedan on which it was based, just like virtually all other sedan based coupes out there. Does it provide you the necessary mental compensation for parking that breeder buggie in the driveway.LOL

Re: Subaru launches 2011 Mediocrity marketing campaign

The coupe market isn't very big anyway; which is why companies really aren't out trying to sell them.

How many Camaro, Mustang, or Genesis Coupe commercials do you see on TV? Zero. The market is small and there's no money to be made in it.
