Exclamation Rusted floor mechanic says i should scrap

rear suspension is rusted so bad and the floor of the car is about to rust through dont know if it is possible to weld on a new floor or something. catalytic converter needs replacement too. the mechanic says if he trys to replace all that it would probably just all come apart because the floor is so rusted. so if it is possible to fix that would be awesome but if not should i just sell the parts that work on ebay or something?

I'm sure you can find another one in much better shape than what it would cost to do all that. - Then look at all the spare parts you have!

Re: Rusted floor mechanic says i should scrap

Everything is fixable, but the work you're talking about here is very extensive. To repair a floor properly you need to remove the interior of the car, buy new floor pans, cut out the rust, weld in the new metal, paint... The cost would be significant.

Re: Rusted floor mechanic says i should scrap

This is a new one, got any pics? Depending on the size and location of the holes it shouldn't be too bad. The repairs don't have to be pretty, just strong and rustproof. You might even be able to get away with sheet metal and pop rivets. NH must have some crappy winters!

Re: Rusted floor mechanic says i should scrap

I patched up many cars with fiberglass and black undercoating. My '69 Thunderbird had more fiberglass than steel in the trunk and inner fenders. I drove it for at least 3 years like that.

Don't scrap it, save it!

Re: Rusted floor mechanic says i should scrap

If the rear suspension is "rusted so bad," you really need a pro to assess the structural integrity of the car. Fiberglass will do you no good if the subframe is about to fall out from under the car. Good luck.

This is, indeed, a new one. Quite possibly an indicator of EXTREME neglect? Pics would be worth 1000 words here.

Chances are the steel is much thicker where the subframe mounts. If anything it's the floor, where the metal is fairly thin and exposed.

Re: Rusted floor mechanic says i should scrap

I would take it to another mechanic and get a second opinion, then after that if they both tell you the same thing I would sell it as a parts car and try to find one in better shape.
It is a great thing to try to keep them on the road but you don't want to be driving something that is going to be a danger to you and the other cars around you.

Of course, but if this thing has taken enough of a salt bath to have a rusted-out floor pan, considering the OP's comment about the suspension, that sure begs a close look.

I also wonder about the rocker panels, quarter panels, doors...

The suspension can still be quite sound even though it has tons of surface rust on it. IMO from the factory it doesn't have adequate rust prevention. Chances are this svx was parked off the road most of it's life. would really help, I certainly wouldn't endorse driving a car that could break in half. I have however gotten many safe years out of flintstones mobiles with proper patching.

Re: Rusted floor mechanic says i should scrap

I say worst case scenario find a rolling chassis thats got a good body and swap everything over, essentially resurrecting one svx and putting one down
i'd send you the rolling chassis from my parts car but the frame rails are gone
