Slippage between 1st and 2nd gear

Noticed some slippage on the tranny between 1st and 2nd gear today after a 15 minute highway run. Car revved but not much power until it popped into second. Any suggestions or easy fixes.
Is this the beginning of the tranny going?
Checked the fluid, it was fine.
Checked the past threads but really not a lot of valuable information....
Thought someone here could make a few suggestions.
186,000 kms on the car.

Re: Slippage between 1st and 2nd gear

Yeah mines been doing this for a few months and I haven't addressed it yet.. Seems it only does it when the engine isn't warm though..

Re: Slippage between 1st and 2nd gear

tried it again this morning and similar problem. will shift into 2nd between 3000 and 3500. But it also started to search a little and go into gear a little harder around 2000-2500. Other than that in the higher gears it seems fine. I have been talking to Budfreak about a 4.44 conversion.
I know a lot of others have done this, I would love to hear your comments... The price sure is good but I would have to make a six-hour road trip to his place near Akron Ohio and I'm not sure that would be wise...
your comments would be appreciated...

Re: Slippage between 1st and 2nd gear

I wish I could help more since I'm having a similar problem.. Try adjusting the brake band or something maybe? I'm sure Tom told me something along those lines.

Re: Slippage between 1st and 2nd gear

Yea not much help here is there Freeman. I'm sure many many people have had similar problems. I'm taking it to the garage tomorrow. The last time I had problems similar to this I drained the tranny fluid three times and the problem was corrected but I'm not sure it is going to be that easy this time...
I think I may need a new tranny. Budfreak on the other svx forums has been very helpful and he will throw in a new tranny and diff along with a Quick change module for a very reasonable price.
Problem is I have to get the car there 6hr roadtrip and figure out what to do for a couple days in Akron ohio or Pittsburgh while he is fixing it..lol

I would also check with svxfiles in Wiley Ford, WV. He has been doing this longer and has more experience, having the first 4.44. gears on the network. The difference in distance is less than 5 miles.

I don't know what Jason's 'reasonable' price is for "throwing in" a 4.44, but I would rather have one "installed".

+1 on each statement above. I'd go to svxfiles for a swap if that's what your looking to do. I was told what the problem was in person and if it's happened once, maybe it's time for a new tranny.

Re: Slippage between 1st and 2nd gear

Ok drained and refilled with tranny fluid. Still slipping between 1st and 2nd. Is it worthwhile to have the bands tightened before I write this tranny off....

brake band would have slipping occur from 2nd to 3rd

Re: Slippage between 1st and 2nd gear

If the band was slipping on the 1st to 2nd change, it would not just rev like it was in neutral, as it would still be in 1st gear, till the band comes on at a higher road speed.
So instead of changing at say 5600, it would go to say 6800 before the band griped to go to 2nd.

Harvey.

Re: Slippage between 1st and 2nd gear

If I'm driving it easy, which I pretty much always do, it is revving up to about 3500 before changing to second. Probably should change in and around 2500? Right???

If it does it on a light throttle, it won't be the band slipping from wear. It can be the throttle position sensor, a speed sensor, or it is low line pressure. If you don't have any codes for the two former ones, I would look at low line pressure as the cause.
You could unplug the dropping resistor, just to see if the higher line pressure stops the problem.

Harvey.

Oh sorry mate, it is behind the battery on the inner guard. Just unplug it to see. it will make all the shifts hard, but you are look to see if the box still shifts the same or not. If it shfts ok it is low line pressure.

Harvey.
