Question Greetings from Fairbanks, Alaska

Hi, my name is Ren (short for Renato), I live in Fairbanks, Alaska, I'm a Subaru Forester owner, active at the www.subaruforester.org site, and a prospective SVX owner.

This sunday I'm going to go take a look at a 1993 SVX for sale, the owner says it has power everything (standard one all 1993 SVX?), leather is in decent shape, the car runs great, etc. Paint is ok.

From lurking here for the past few days while waiting for my account to be activated I have gathered that the transmission is the Achilles heels of the SVX, so I'll be inquiring about rebuilds, etc. What are other areas to look for?

They do not salt the roads during the winter here in Fairbanks, but the car might not be originally from here, I'll be looking for rust anyway. What are the most rust prone areas?

Asking price for the SVX is $3500, I don't know the mileage, but is that a fair asking price?

Any tips will be appreciated!

Power: windows, seatbelt, drivers seat, mirrors, locks, radio antenna, steering.

The trans will last if treated well. Listen for rear bearings roar. Check power steering rack leaks, oil pump leak, main seals leaks, steering pump leak, oil in the air intake.

In Alaska, everything under the car will be caked with dirt and probably soft/rust prone. If all the iron on the front of the engine (alt bracket, crank pulley) is rusted it's likely an out-of-state car.
Carfax will tell where it's from. Mine came up from Georgia in '95.

Provided it runs well, sure.

If you buy it add an in-line trans cooler. Don't "flush" the trans oil.

Re: Greetings from Fairbanks, Alaska

Thanks for the tips. I'll be looking at the car later this week.

You're right about the dirt on the underside... my Forester can't seem to stay clean!!
