Newly cracked paint. Argh.

Hey, kids,

I'd post this on the RX-8 forum, but, look, the membership on that site is not exactly the brightest.

I rolled the rear arches on my RX-8 a couple weeks ago. When I did so, I cracked the paint on one side. Argh. Exactly what I was trying to avoid. Anyway, the crack is on the inside of the lip now, where I can't see it. That's what worries me.

I'd like to make sure that this crack doesn't quietly turn into a hole in the quarter panel while Im not looking. Any suggestions on how I should treat it?

If it's not visible, I'd mask off the pretty parts and hit it with a can of spray on undercoating.

Do you have any recommendations for specific products?

This is exactly the sort of advice I was looking for - the spot is, in fact, not normally visible.

I don't remember any brands?? I think it may have been an Advance Auto branded spray can when we got the stuff for the racer and trailer.

It's thick and matt black, sticks well and will help protect from flying gravel...

...sand the cracked areas down, feather the edges in such a way that you cant get your fiingernails under the paint (Or feel where you sanded, for that matter) before you paint or undercoat it

Use 220 grit then finish it off with 400. keep your repair area as tight as possible

Altho this is the "correct" way to do it^^^, in a area unseen I would get some touch-up paint and put it on thick.

And for future reference for all....when you roll your fenders, use a heat gun to warm up the paint before rolling the lip

I did use a heat gun. Either it wasn't warm enough or I went too fast.

even a repair unseen will come back to haunt you if done wrong. I say sand it down so your little crack doesnt end up chipping off all the way to where you CAN see

I'm agreeing with Eric 100% here. Not just because it is the "proper" way to do it, but remember it is inside the wheel arch if I understand you correctly. That's a tough environment. You will have road muck and salt and stone chips and all sorts abrading away at that.

Flat it back till there is no "feel" on the crack, then put on lots of undercoat.
