Question 4.44 in fwd svx

stupid question can this be done or do you need to convert to awd for it to work?

I wouldn't reccomend "converting" to awd, it's quite the hassle i hear. However, all you have to do is not connect a driveshaft, and bam, fwd 4.44. I'm sure there's a bit more to it, but that should work.

thanks for the input see i think my tranny might be slipping and id rather go to 4.44 but i dont know how to do it because i don't think anyone has done it yet

Give it to tom, he'll make something out of it. Worst case scenario, install a rebuilt trans and a cooler, and you should see significantly improved life.

you probely could but i wouldn't, as i don't think the diff could take it. on the same note with 4.11 's i could roast the tires in front wheel drive with no problem, so i think traction would become a major issue with 4.44's. it's not that bad to convert to 4wd, if its like most older subie's you just need the rear lower suspension, and then you have to mount the center of the drive shaft. i havent gone from fwd to awd, this is just what you have to do in an 80's era to go i'm sure someone more informed will chime in.

i was goin to try the 4.44 trans with matching rear. so it would still have traction problems from quicker power because i was quoted about $2400 for tow, labor, parts for the awd conversion with 4.44s

srry i meant would it be possible to have the 4.44 with the fwd without ill side affects or just get converted to awd with 4.44s

yes you can convert a 4.44 awd trans to a fwd... Need to get in behind the rear plate to swap some parts but it is easily done

I converted mine from FWD to AWD and it wasn't bad, except that I had to custom make some of the wiring, like the FWD fuse and the wire for the FWD and (useless) AT-Oil temp light. I was always going to set it to a trigger on my digital trans temp gauge but when i got it I found out the new models no longer had the output for it.

when i first got my 4.44 awd running, it was binding (fixed now!

so i ran in fwd for a while......
combined with skinny snow tires it equaled STUPIDLY easy wheelspin!!
(not that i did it often,since i didnt want to risk ruining anything...... )

fun in a childish way but ultimately kinda sucky when some punk kid in a riced out civic can kick yer butt from a stop light........

but once u are rolling..........oh yeah baby look out !!
