Follow up: After a one day douche, a water spritz & 2 days of drying, I re-installed that bad boy.
Results: Car idles like two cylinders disconnected, with blue smoke wafting from the exhaust. Not pretty. I had also regenerated the K & N filter in the interim. Oh well, it's back to the trusty imitation SVX Impreza MAF.

I still wonder though if any stealthy long term ill effects will come along to bite me in the arse.

Ron.

Ron,
The blue smoke is probably from a bit too much oil on the K&N, which may have also fouled the MAF element...try a little spray of throttle body cleaner on the element before you go back to the Impreza MAF

Ron,
What Bill said, but before you replace the MAF with the Impreza one, just remove the filter (run the car without it) and see if it makes a difference. I agree with Bill that it sounds like too much oil on the filter fouling the MAF. Then again, it may just be a BAD MAF ......

Sounds logical, Bill, but I ran the Impreza MAF in the car for a day AFTER I'd re-oiled the K & N with no ill effects. T'was only after I re-installed the vinegarette SVX MAF that the smoke n' mirrors appeared.
Thanks anyway.

Ron.

Ouch. Mine is currently in the drying phase after a day of soak followed by the spritz. I may have created a POS from my MAF.

Don't know if they have changed it,

But when they first used the MAF units, they had a burn off peroid, when a larger current was flowed through the sensor wire, to burn off any deposits. I forget if it was on start-up or switch off.
It was to keep the wire clean, to ensure true readings.
