Need opinion on 1990 Mazda 626

I went to a local auto-x event on sunday pondered what it would take to keep my SVX off the course... Well I found a 1990 Mazda 626 4cyl auto trans and just over 200k miles and not that bad of shape apparently all for 200 bucks what do you guys think?

well the 2.2 4 cyl of those years is rather weak..with an auto..even more so..the price is right eh? but serioulsy maybe try to find an 88-90 Mazda MX-6 GT..the turbo makes some good power..and they are fairly reliable considering thier age now

For $200 you can't go wrong!

Although it isn't a horrible chasis, you're gonna get slaughtered in H stock with it let alone what any changes would do to ya in the modded classes. If that isn't an issue go right ahead. If it is find yourself a $400 XT6 (preferably FWD as the fulltime 4wds have the air suspension that doesn't perform the greatest in an autox). You'll be much happier, parts are fairly cheap and plentiful and best of all its the big brother to the SVX. My guess is you'll love driving it so much your SVX will spend more time at home napping.

Well to tell the truth the biggest reason I don't want to go out with the SVX is that even after the cooler install I still smell trans every time I get out....Nothing leaking nothing burning no puddles no nothing which is why thats agravating. Oh and even at trans cooler install after about 12k of my brand of abuse the fluid still looked brand new

Edit: BTW you guys are awsome I have only gotten one reply(its been up for a day now here 1 hr max) on the Mazda forum and that was has the trans been fixed as of recently kinda question post

Even more of a reason for the FWD XT6. I have no problems dropping my 4EAT into gear at 8k on a select basis at the track. At 195k the tranny is showing signs of some slippage but should be good for another 50k or so.

Talking

I'd say anything that starts all by itself for two hunnert bucks, & has all four wheels touching the ground at the same time is worth buying. Personally I'd try talking the owner all the way down to $195, but that's my nature. Are you just trying to learn auto-X basics, or do you expect to actually compete? Pull one spark plug wire off & compete in K stock No challengers. Guaranteed trophy.
Anyway, you sound like a good run against my $100 240 SX. I need all the help I can get!

Have fun!

Ron
