Here's the instructions to pull the codes.
http://www.subaru-svx.net/photos/user.php?How-To|14264 There will only be codes if your "Check Engine" light has come on. If your speedo has quit and your CE light is on then the problem must be speed sensor #2. That's the sensor which drives the speedo (and several other things). If your CE light is not on, then the ECU is still getting a signal from the sensor, so the problem is more likely to be at the speedo end. There's some information about speedo problems in the HowTo folder. Phil. |

If your speedo quit, it's highly likely that the plastic piece going into the top of the trans threw in the towel....hope this isn't the case! (i.e. you have to pull the trans to get to it)

no speedo
When my speedo quit I got lucky. Not wanting to believe a speed sensor or such was bad, I cleaned and wiggled connector at speed sensor. Next I unplugged the two big black connectors on top of tranny and took a pair of fine needle nose pliers and slightly moved the male pins. Sometimes there is dielectric grease in the connectors, anyway I replugged everything and my speedo started working again, whew. I realize this is the simpliest scenario tho.

I will explain in Detail... so mabey SOMEONE can give me a clue... When i first got the SVX... As long as I was Accelerating... I had a Speedo Reading, I let off the gass, needle droped... this continued for about 3 weeks... then it started to be intermit.. it would read my speed when IT wanted to... then it finaly died.... However... sence I got used to knowing my speed via my RPM's.... I reset my Trip sence I wasnt paying much attention to that side of my dash anymore (unless I was low on gas of course) Sence 2 months ago... my Trip, just yesterday, read 22miles... so in 2 months... of driving darn near everyday..... it has shown up only 22 miles... i saw this a few times... out of no where the needle would jump up to my speed for a sec... and dead again... Is this an electrical problem? I took my intake Pipe off yesterady and made sure the connector of Sensor 2 was on there good... it was... I even looked realy close at the Male pins inside the top of Sensor 2... looked fine (that hurt trying to hold myself up and look close at them too... my girl actualy had to hold my feet as I was balancing on the side of the car LOL) I also checked the connections going to the ECU... un/repluged everything... still nothing... so at this point I think its just dead.... or is there anything im missing (and yes... the ECU Says Sensor 2 when I pull codes.. along with both my Oxy Sensors... but im not to worried about them ATM)

It's the sensor itself...not the connectors. I think the most common problem is a plastic gear that breaks inside. If you search you should find more info on this.

OK, going to just replace the #2 sensor.......problem is subaruparts.com doesn't show that you can just buy one or the other sensor. It shows to come as a assy...(both sensors) does anyone have the part # for just the #2 sensor????? I don't want to buy both to get just the one I need. Just so I understand, the #2 sensor is mounted OUTSIDE of the case, and sensor 1 is the one inside the case??
Speedo works most of the time, but when it quits the ck engine light comes on Last edited by scottsubarus; 09-30-2004 at 01:06 PM. |
