Looking at buying but engine ticks
I'm looking at buying a 94 SVX but when I drove it yesterday I pulled over, my wife got out to drive and she asked what that noise was. Usually she doesn't notice things like this so it made me curious. I got out and could hear a fairly loud ticking noise. I opened the hood and I'm guessing it is either the injectors or the lifters. Is this normal? I've had Toyotas in the past and they are quiet at idle. I hate to buy it and then have problems. The car has 99,000 miles on it. Any info would be helpful.

Heh...they all tick. I think. Anyway, I think most of the time it's injector noise - I have had five Subarus (still have three) and they all have noisey injectors. I wouldn't know how to tell you the difference between lifters and injectors, but I bet somebody here does.

normal
A ticking noise that gets quiter as the engine warms (but never completely goes away) is a trademark of Subaru's. Working at a Subaru dealership and having owned or driven almost every model they've made in the past 14 (and probably longer) years I can say without hesitation that this is absolutely normal. They all tick. There are several reasons for it I'm sure, but I think the main one is the horizontal layout. As long as the ticking isn't very loud, you're probably OK.

Well I took the SVX to a mechanic yesterday and when I got there the ticking had gone away. My guess is that it was a lifter that had bled down while they had the car garaged for the past few months and it just took it a while to pump back up. Anyway my wife without me knowing had already set up insurance and was ready to buy it from the seller. We pick it up today!!!

I have found that if they sit for awhile, they will tick more than if you are driving them every day. That is not surprising that it had gone away by the time you got it to the mechanic. I wouldn't worry about it then. Good luck and welcome to the site.

The best Tech around is Jerry Costa at Tri-State Subaru in Webster, MA. He is a Senior Master Subaru Tech with more than 25 years experience working on Subaru's. He has every ASE certification you can get. And , as an added bonus, my father runs the Service Department at Tri-State, so I'm sure he can give you a decent price for the job.
Let me know what you think. Dave P.S. In his spare time, Jerry took an early Impreza and turned it into a "home made" STI. It was just a hair slower than the real thing, and it was an automatic!!! |
