Manual transmission crossmember
When I first installed the six speed I had some clearence issues with the transmission crossmember I had welded up for the old five speed, which looked like http://x94-161-10.micro.umn.edu/svx/...s/Image13.html
After looking around for someone in the area who knew what he was doing, I finally took my car to a local roll cage and custom fab guy a couple of months ago. He did a great job redoing the mount. Pics are up in my personal locker, in the "New crossmember" folder. In these pics the exhaust was dropped so I could do some work on the shift linkage, but you get the idea. At the same time I put in an STi tranny mount, and the surface rust isn't a problem either, now Just thought I'd post this in case someone needs some ideas; basically this negates the need for an old Legacy crossmember to get things to fit properly. This guy's web site is at http://www.paulscages.com/ 'Later!

You just gave me a great idea for my crossmember issue. Thanks! I looked in your locker, wher did you get your shifter knob?? It looks like it matches the interior color perfectly. Doug

Re: Re: Manual transmission crossmember
Cool now I just wish I knew how to weld...maybe this summer I'll take a class or something.
As for the shift knob, if you're referring to the old five speed one, I think it's from a '99 Impreza RS; the six speed knob is from a 2002 JDM WRX STi (which is where all of the other stuff came from)... Quote:

Where did you source your JDM parts from? I can't seem to find anything...

Your six speed cross member is like the one I built for my 5 speed, except I ran a piece of roll cage tubing across the rear subframe brackets instead of using the factory brace. looks good thoe.
As for that old 5 speed mount, bla, no wonder it had issues. See mine! Kinda

Yeah the old one was um...words don't really do it justice It was sorta slapped together by a local truck frame welding guy, who was used to working with larger expanses of steel, I guess. The old pics from that day are at http://160.94.161.10/svx/crossmember/ if anyone wants to see an SVX on five foot jackstands...
I got my parts just looking on nasioc.com; you have to wait a bit sometimes since things aren't often in stock, but it as worked pretty well for me in the past...

Specs !? Thats funny. not really, I can try to describe it but thats hard to do, and the only pic I have of it dosn't really show it well. Basicly it's alot like Alex's but instead of the bars running to the stock cross bar, they run to a peice of roll cage tubing that is welded to the subframe brackets.
I don't know if that helps at all, but if I had a spare SVX for a jig I could make more of them. The best part of it is that you don't have to weld or drill holes in the body.

I wish
I wish I'd thought to do it the way you guys did it. I really didn't like the idea of having to weld to the subframe/body. Besides the fact that I'd never welded before. I would have still had to weld the shifter support bracket to the body but that was a much smaller and not structural weld. Ah well, live and learn.
