FYI: Reman Tranny Cost

In case anyone's been wondering, the Subaru dealer here in Santa Fe quoted me a price of approx $4500 USD before taxes for an installed Subaru-remanufactured transmission.

$3800 for the tranny, $650 for labor.

Wow, that's a full 100.00 less than they quoted me, two years ago, in Evansville, Indiana (when the quote was 2,700.00 in Hawaii and most of the country -- full story in the Yahoo Archive).

Anything over $3000 installed is too much. Period. Tell them to do that price, or go somewhere else.

Mike

PS- Was it Premier Subaru? My car currently carries their license plate frame lol.

Randy, I think some of your winter ice holes must work in the dealer's service department.

The Yahoo archives only searched back to March 2002, though it's entirely possible that I don't know how to work that site. It's got a much less friendly interface than this one does.

It was Premier. They're the only dealer in Santa Fe. I was in to get some other stuff done - my transmission's fine so far (knock on fake wood trim).

There are three Subaru dealerships in Albuquerque, about 40 miles away. I think competition helps keep prices down.

Mike, are you the license plate frame collector?

I am a license plate frame collector. I try to get one from any subaru dealer I can when I travel.

Where was that picture taken? Looks really . . . umm, East.

You snagged a license plate frame from the most prestigious Subaru dealer in New Mexico.

Tranny should cost around 1500-2000 and 2500 at most. The total job including VAT should be around 3500 at most.

I got a quote from my local dealer and they said that it was $1,500 + 1,000 core + install.

Well, as they say to all the tourists who choke at the prices charged around here - Welcome to Santa Fe!

I seriously doubt I'll get any significant work done by this particular dealer.

Glad you mentioned the cost of that dealership SFSVX--they are the closest dealership to me and was going to have rear bearings done. Maybe I will check the Albuquerque dealers first. One time before in Okla I removed the rear hubs assemblies and took them to a dealer to install. They were not too happy but did it and quite cheaply. (Of course I used an autoshop owner friends company name and address to get a dealer discount.)

Wish I could do the same here.

Lee, next time you're coming to Santa Fe, maybe we can have a mini-meet (micro-meet?). Let me know.
