The Haynes manual I have says you need to disconnect the Test Mode Connector, and turn the ignition ON. [but don't start the engine] Then you count the blinking of the CE light, the usual way. To get at it, you need to take off the panel facing the driver's knees. There are two screws to remove, then the panel is only held on with 3 clips on the top edge. Pull panel downwards. I can't remember the colour of the connector, or the wire, but it's easy to find. It only has one wire to and from. The connector itself is spade terminal [or screwdriver blade] broad at the bottom, then steps in narrow at the top. Pull this apart, turn on the ignition, your CE should blink the codes. Joe PS, when you get the codes, I can give you what they mean.

THat's not right. You need to connect the two black connectors under the dash, then turn the key on and read the code. It's like 6-8 screws to get that panel off, but once you know where to look you can do it without removing the panel at all. Only takes me a minute or two to check codes nowadays.

If the US version for OBD 1 is different, I'm sorry for the misinformation. We have had many long threads about [OBD] diagnostics, and they seem to be un-necessarily complex between different markets. Joe

Thanks guys. Would the codes be the same as the SVX?

Aside from the 2 extra misfire codes I believe they are the same. I've seen Subaru codes here and there and they often list the codes for all Subarus in one list with the slight differences noted.

I finally found those stinking wires. Apparently, they can be pretty much anywhere under there. They weren't even in the same place on both my 90 Legacys. Anyway, it's throwing about 10 codes. I used the clear function and it is still throwing them. I guess it's probably just a bad ECU.

I had a similar situation on my Justy - turned out to be just a bad battery. It's highly unlikely 10 sensors failed at the same time.
