Question How to pronounce tsunami?

Here it is on Dictionary.com

http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=Tsunami

I have the last part, but the "ts" is confusing, it seems everyone pronounces it "s", but that isn't the way the dictionary has it...

Exclamation

Thirteen years ago my daughter bought a Chesapeake Bay retriever (that's a dog brand), & guess what she named him?

Yup.

She's since shortened his name to Tsu (Soo), so when calling him around bodies of water, no alarms go off.

Ron.

On yesterday's edition of NPR's Science Friday, one of the guests who is a science columnist was talking about the "too-NAM-ee", and that's how she pronounced it.

Kinda made me take the other stuff she said with a grain of salt...hrm.

I believe the silent T is supposed to make the S a bit harder. Pay close attention where your tongue is when you pronounce the word "sue." It starts off in a fairly natural position. Do this again with the word "two" and notice where the tongue starts.

The word "sue" releases air from your mouth as soon as you move your lungs. The word "two" holds back the air until your tongue releases it. In effect, the non-word "tsue" requires you to say the word "sue" but use your tongue to release the air.

If try to pronounce "sue" but start with your tongue poised to say "two," you will get a very hard S, beginning with a clearly audible T sound.

Perhaps some professor will prove me wrong, but I believe this is what is intended by having the silent T on "tsunami." This is how I pronounce it. Most people don't even notice my very hard S, and nobody gives me funny looks or chuckles. It's a fine line I suppose, but I think most people soften the S far too much.

...or I'm just plain wrong. How do you pronounce "tomato?"

I was refering to the pronunciation guide here, I consulted it for help since I herd the word pronounced with a "t" a couple times and wanted to confirm the proper way, then I found where the pronounciation guide started with "ts"
