i would definately go with studless tires to avoid unwanted strain on your drivetrain.

Why would that cause extra strain?

I would go studless. The ones with studs would tend to skate unless on ice.

In that case, should I stay with 225 on my stock rims, or go 215?
Would 215 be ok for 7.5" rims?

I use 215 55 16 studded Nokian Hakapalita I tires. They do not skate on dry pavement. Years ago studs did that. Today the technology has improved.
If you have slush, glare ice, black ice, freezing rain or just plain frozen slippery roads, safety tests prove that you can stop 30% better with studs. They also give you much better cornering traction on ice before you lose control. Nokian has an "Ecco Stud" stytem which is superior to other types. Their "Haka" tires are rated as good as Blizzak and Michelin Alpine. (They are made in Finland) Rule of thumb when buying any snow tire is to go narrower than your summer tire, not wider. Wide tires ride up over the snow then the weight of the car pushes them down, like a plough. Narrower tires cut through the snow better, parting it rather than pushing it. This link may help. http://www.nokiantires.com/newsite/index.html This article is helpful if you are not interested in studs. http://www.cbc.ca/consumers/market/f...res/index.html Another link: http://www.tc.gc.ca/roadsafety/topic...er/wintere.htm Last edited by SVX_MY_BABY; 09-20-2004 at 07:36 AM. |
