Re: so close to being mine

I have an account set aside for my SVX ( and mine is running great and at this point needs nothing ) I put $100 a month into an account The car you want looks like it needs about $1,000 to get it up and running. i too agree . save your money the SVX is too expensive to think you can drive it like a Honda civic is a real pipe dream .

Sound advice and good to live by, especially for anyone owning this vehicle.
At least if he does get the SVX, the XT will be a good backup for him I suppose or he can work on putting money into the SVX to make it road worthy while driving the XT. Prepare to sign some paychecks over directly to the SVX so it can have its field day in repairs

Re: so close to being mine

guys WTF!

the reason for taking my xt6 off is because i do not want to run it in the winter.
everyone around me *****es that i have a wagon and should get a coupe, i found another coupe and i get hollered at by not having enough funds.

I'd have money laying around if i save it not spend it.

what the hell could go wrong with the car so much ?, so i get a notion from you guys like the svx is a unreliable car, costing hundreds every month, be more specific what goes wrong with a car every month?!

i wanted one for a long time now, this one is in my reach, i'm not gonna let it go.

i'm not letting go

Re: so close to being mine

I don't get the doom and gloom talk about extensive repairs. I have over 40k miles on mine in the past year. Almost everything I have done to is was a pre-existing problem that I knew about when I bought the car. Even including the pre-existing items, I think I've done alright for a 14 year old car that now has 125k miles on it.

Mine took quite a bit of money this year, but then again my transmission went out and the car was in an accident. Anyhow, we have been through this before with Jawn, he knows what he wants, and I think he be able to maintain it.

Re: so close to being mine

I believe in you too. The car has some evil problems. I too had real good luck with my original SVX 1992. Never had the tranny problems , wheel bearings or brake problems. I had a both front CV joints go . I replaced them for $65.00 each . The exhaust finally went after 78,000 miles . The gas lines had to be replaced. the power steering heeded the O ring fix, (thanks to the guys on the forum for that one ) Subaru dealer wanted $500 for a new pump. I thought the steering rack went but it was a line rusted through , so I replaced them all for $500.00.The problem is the parts are not always easy to find or get . Not like a Chevy or a Mustang ,VW or Jeep. I just think the one you are looking at needs more TLC than you think. If you think you can save it go for it . Many have bought low $$$$ cars thinking the same thing only to end up selling them giving up on them or parting them out . I said it before drive the few extra miles if you can get a better one, spend a few $$ up front for a good one. We will still be here to help no matter what you decide. Your money your decision .

Re: so close to being mine

I think you can handle it too. Save your money and buy that thing. You can handle the rust and if the trans blows I believe you can handle that too.

Get money, buy the damn car, and then pick up women

But if you do buy it make sure you stick a little money back for some repairs.

Re: so close to being mine

I mean in no way to discourage you from owning an SVX.
I think we are just trying to warn you this is not a cheap car.
We just want you to be prepared.

I bought my 92 in Feb of 2010. I payed $2,000 for her.
Here is my thread on what I had fixed when I got it ~$1200:
http://www.subaru-svx.net/forum/showthread.php?t=54555
Then another $250 for the Nevin bar.
Another $1100 for the wheels and tires..

She still needs engine mounts.. mine are torn.. so group n modified mounts will be another $250..
She still needs struts and mounts, I want konis and new springs so that is like $1600...
The tranny is slipping at low speed in second sometimes... so I am banking for the 4.44 swap that will be in her future..that is like another $1500 or something.

So I have put $2,500 into my $2,000 SVX over the last 2 years.
And she still needs another $3,500 of work...

It's lookin like my $2,000 SVX will end up costing me $7,000 when all is said and done. Which is just about what I thought it would cost me...

Re: so close to being mine

John-

I'm really sorry if that came out as sounding harsh. It's just how I express myself. I'm working on that.

What I'm most afraid of is that you'll buy the svx, then in 2 months the head gaskets blow or some other >$1000 repair. Because you don't seem to have any savings set aside, I'm concerned that the car will just sit in your garage and deteriorate, or get parted out.

I think it would be a very smart move to take the money from the insurance company and use it as a great head start on a savings account so that if something happens (loss of job, unexpected medical bill, etc) you have the ability to stay afloat.

I know this is an SVX forum and not a financial advice place, but I have always felt that it has been my place to try and prevent people from making the same mistakes that I have in the past.

The blunt honesty of this forum is what makes it great. The passion to preserve the mark. SubaruJawn, I think you are seeing the support you will receive in the end, whatever your decision.

Re: so close to being mine

Yea, don't be offended... we're all just looking out for you really. It's a fair warning for any newcomer to the SVX. You have your heart set on it and you'll get it, that's cool. Maybe you'll luck out and have very little to no issues for the longest time to come and that would be great. It's not all horror stories with repairs but at least you're not going in blindly expecting it to be unrealistically reliable. You've seem to put a lot of heart into the XT, no reason why you'll not do it for that SVX either.
