Re: Thinking of painting my gold wheels.

Having painted my bbs wheels last summer, I'd say get them powdercoated.

I suppose if you're just painting over the existing gold it might not be so bad, but in my case I needed to remove multiple layers of DIY paint the previous owner had caked on. The nooks and contours of those BBS wheels made it a giant PITA to get the paint stripped. Even with chemical stripper. If I had to do it again, I'd pony up to have the professionally sandblasted and powdercoated and call it a day.

Re: Thinking of painting my gold wheels.

Although a long video, there is lot of valuble information and tips enclosed.

PREPARATION is definitely the key to a long-lasting job. Brake Cleaner and Scotch-brite are great products for this.

I will be doing it DIY. I don't really have the money for powder coating, and if I am not happy with the out come I can always go that route. Besides it is the type of tedious detail work I am good at.

Re: Thinking of painting my gold wheels.

I have the gold wheels on a Bordeaux pearl and think it looks really good. I'm not fond of the gray wheels. I think they look covered w/brake dust but if you don't like the gold sell them. They are harder to find and worth more than the silver wheels. Changing tires only costs $10 at Walmart. I think you'd get a better end product if you started w/grey rims.

Re: Thinking of painting my gold wheels.

Honestly guys the wheels are not in great shape, every one has curb rash to some extent. One of them has a large gash in the edge and as I work on them I am discovering multiple chips and paint bubbles on the spokes and insides that need to be sanded down. Believe me it is a good time to refinish them.

I understand your point about the brake dust look of the gray, I don't see it that way. The way I see it is that Silver wheels are too light, black wheels are too dark. Gunmetal goes in between. (and will hide brake dust)

This is the look I am hoping to achieve.

That is a good color. In fact, I was interested in buying them for the second SVX that I had just purchased.

Re: Thinking of painting my gold wheels.

I have to admit this project is not going as quite well as I had hoped. I am finding it hard to get a nice final smooth coat with this metallic paint. The "wet" coat. Particularly on the insides of the wheels where there are larger smooth areas. Luckily that part doesn't show too much. On the plus side the repair of the big gash on the edge came out pretty good, can't even tell where it was now. I can also see that I will like the color a lot too, it is going to give the silver car a way more aggressive look than the bright sunnyness of the gold.

Now I better get back to work on them. At the speed I am going it will be a long while before they are all done.

Painted my gold wheels.

They came out okay. The first one I sprayed is not as nice as the others. I got better at painting as the project progressed. I am planning on redoing that one later. I wish they were a few shades lighter but overall I m happy with the results.

Thanks I am not sure how I feel yet. I like them in the sun but in the shade they are pretty dark. I will probably keep them like this for a few seasons then maybe get them professionally redone in a custom color.

Re: Thinking of painting my gold wheels.

Those are very close in color to mine! I agree that they are a little dark, but they sure look nice in the sunlight if they are shiny clean!
