Injector cleaner I don't think would do anything for a leaky injector. A clogged injector though...

i'd poke around and see if there are any broken/cracked/missing vac lines and also check the interfaces between the maf and intake, intake and TB, TB and manifold, mani and lower mani, and lower mani and and head. For example, after my 6-speed swap I had forgotten to tighten the intake to TB clamps, so they were loose for a little, but not enough to tell that something was wrong. But still a leak.

Vac lines are pretty likely to be issue, especially if some work has been done, they break pretty easily.

I'll have to do that!

By saying "I'll do that," I of course mean I'll pay Tom to do it for me.

Re: Might as well drive an SUV..

Sunday morning, silver SVX. Filled the tank with 5.87 gallons of Econo-Sludge E-10, 87 octane regular. Drove 128.9 miles (maybe 75% highway/25 maze-of-traffic-lights) and topped-off with 4.5 gallons of Super Cheep E-10, 93 octane premium. 28.64 MPG. Not bad.

For contrast, my previous fill-up after a week of short-trip commuting (which includes a few miles of traffic-free, curvy two-lane): 16.64.

This should be pretty typical mileage for these cars, in normal driving.

Re: Might as well drive an SUV..

We live in a valley I live in the bottom of the valley. My car seldom leaves the town but most driving is stop and go and up and down hills (Steep hills ) Heck , takes me sometime a week to use 5 gallons of gas, or go 75 miles . still I get between 14 and 15 MPG. Sorry but an SUV doing the same driving, ( a friend has a MDX ) and she complains about 12 MPG...I have not tried a long distance drive yet. I was told by the PO is is almost 30MPG. To Be SEEN I guess

Re: Might as well drive an SUV..

My exhaust coughs smoke and sometimes it backfires and it always covers the back of my car with a black layer of exhaust leavings..

If it happens to be injectors... What's the best route to fix this kind of thing? Price, brand, type, etc?

if your car has 170k on it, maybe a good service to get it running properly (coil packs, plugs, PCV, sensors, etc.) should have come before the "Dimpled/slotted rotors & Axxis ceramic brakes, SS lines, OT's forged custom wheels, XS-HF137 Sony Xplod speakers, 6000k HID's (lows & fogs), resistor mod, 1½" Sleek Spoiler mod, custom exhaust by OT , "secret" aluminum racing radiator, Summit Racing 400# x 300# springs w/ Koni's by svxfiles, ClassGlass fiberglass hood /w scoop".

just my opinion.

Had all those things for a while. The car was at somewhere around 140k when I got it. Spark plugs have already been done recently, along with new coil packs. It used to belong to OT so I guess I'm spoiled by the fact that he's so close and he used to own it, I assumed any crucial maintenance had already been completed. I just hit 170k recently.

Guess I know what I'll be spending my money on soon..

If that came from OT, then I'm sure it was well sorted out. Good luck getting it back to 100%. Luckily my drive to work is only 11 miles, because i get around 15mpg.

Money says that the short trip being so short is part of why your fuel economy is so poor.

That, tuned for more juice, and stop-n-go traffic.

Re: Might as well drive an SUV..

I'm getting a bit over 22 I guess. mixed mostly city driving. flat out on Hwy, I always got pretty good mileage so long as I it's under 80 and on cruise. The car likes 80. It's a sweet spot or something. Even now with either a bad plug or a bad coil who knows , it's stumbling on start of sometimes and that 40 to 50 range with a slight hill. average is 300 a tank with the problem.... hard to tell I still had 5 gals in the tank on my last fill up. and started putting in 93 again.

now to figure out where the sunroof drains are or my new little water getting in problem..... just under passenger seat and rear passenger area.. More under pass seat.. easy to clean cause the seat is out. but still wondering where it is coming from.

Re: Might as well drive an SUV..

1st highway driving with this car 5 speed . Mixed driving 75 miles total approx 20 miles in town busy main street traffic lights etc. and 55 Miles of high way 65 to 80 MPH . I got 26.8 MPG ( 2.8 gallons ) Not complaining gas cost $ 11.00 smile on my face while driving Priceless.
fuel Gage guessing how much is left . Filling and going to empty etc. is not accurate . ONLY ONE WAY fill it at a gas station . Do your driving and fill it again hopefully at the same gas station . All pumps do not have the same shut off .
Brother in law once told me his 57 caddy got 20 mpg . 20 gal tank and we ran out of gas one day after 220 mile round trip to NY starting with a full tank. He would fill the tank and record what he put in then drive and record what hi put in and divide by 2 or some other equation he invented .

This is the EXACT same method that OT told me to do. I don't know what the results are yet but I will soon. Thanks for the advice. This issue is killing me.

Not only is the fuel issue frustrating, I still have smoke coming out of the rear passenger exhaust and I'm wondering if this has anything to do with it.

Re: Might as well drive an SUV..

it is very simple to figure out...

Step 1: fill up the car at the gas station.
Step 2: reset your trip meter before leaving said station
Step 3: after a couple hundred miles or so go back to the gas station and fill up again
Step 4: divide your miles driven as recorded on your trip meter by however many gallons you just put in your car.

I would routinely get 24-28mpg with mixed driving in every SVX I owned except my brilliant red. I never checked the mpg on that car after the 4.44 swap and with the 18" wheels, but my guess is that it went down.

Oh and my supercharged one now too. I get about 10mpg or so now with that
