Sputtering

My car started doing this over the last week. During accel the car sputters almost like it's misfiring. While at idle it cannot hold a concistent idle. Keeps bogging out like misfiring as well. Any suggestions as to what to check? My trans is messing up so could that be the cause even though the trans has been messing up for a few months now? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Could be the timing, timing belt slipped a few notches...

You could take off one of the timing belt covers and using a wrench rotate your engine while you are in neutral and see whether the timing belt marks line up on one of the camshafts.

Just throwing it out there...

Too bad you cant bring it when you come to get the trans on saturday... I would take a look at it for you. In the mean time you can look at the IAC (idle air controller) it is a plug looking thing with 2 screws on it. You can slightly loosen the screws and turn the "plug" part of it to allow/disallow air flow for your idle.

ooooooo........ Scratch that. I didnt see the acceleration problem. Could be your MAF or a cam sensor..... If you can bring it on saturday go for it. You can fit a 4eat tranny in the trunk.......

If I could bring it I definatly would but unfortunatly my Xterra will be making the trip. The timing belt was just replaced when I bought it back in August so I doubt that it's that but you never know. When I come down maybe you could point out those sensors so I'll know what to check out. Think I'm lucky enough to have it be the plugs and or wires?

lucky? Changing an SVX's plugs is not what I call lucky A cam sensor is a 10 minute job and that is including spending 8 minutes looking for tools.

Are the plugs and wires really that bad? I'll check out that sensor after I do the tranny and hopefully that may solve the prob.

If by wires you mean coils, the only thing hard about them is the price.First time I changed plugs it took about 1 1/2 hours because one of the coil caps broke in half and I had to use an o ring pick to get it out. That burned up about 15 minutes! I can change them now in under 45 minutes.(the plugs, not coils).Coils connect at the back of the block and are easy to get to.Hope this helps.

cam sensor is located on the front driver side along the timing belt cover.

coil

Mine does the same thing. Could also be that one of your spark plug coils has a short in it. Your fuel injectors my be another issue.

Good luck.

cam sensor

Would a bad cam sensor be picked up by the dealership diagnostic computer? Or to replace it be a trial and error thing? When I had my car diagnosed recently the cam sensor was not picked up.

Thanks,

Trey

Im having the same problem. New timing, new angle sensors, new plugs. Im down to either the coils, or maybe the MAF is alittle dirty. I hope to get it figured out soon, I hate sputtering away from a stop light......
