Is there an MT that doesn't work?

I've done the searching on here (perhaps i just suck at it) and I couldn't really find anything that would tell me which transmissions will or won't fit. The car is a 1992. Don't know trim level.

(1) I'm assuming there is no list because subaru has matching bellhousings and shaft locations on their trannys? If i'm wrong please correct me.

(2)That means that the only major consideration that needs to be taken is gear ratio correct?

(3) If I buy a manual transmission with a different diff ratio then I need the rear diff out of that same car as well, correct?

(4) If I buy an MT with a matching diff ratio then I just need the tranny and associated swap/install parts?

(5) And who is it who has the $1000 MT swap howto? I found it once but I can't remember who has it. I know Tom has the 5mt/6mt swap, and i printed that off, i just want as much reference as possible.

Thanks guys.

1 Any MT from an Imp or Legacy platform will work.

2 Yes

3 Yeah, but the rear diff from most Impreza's won't allow you to swap your LSD carrier over.

4 There is no Subaru MT with a final drive of 3.545. Some WRX's 2000-2005(???) have a 3.9 ratio with an aditional 1.1:1 center gear so that they use a 3.545 rear differential. And yes, if you use one of these then you keep your stock rear diff.

5 Huck did the $1000 write up.

Yep, it was me that did the "less than $1000" write up...
And any EJ series Mannual tranny will bolt up. (Impreza, Legacy, Forester
but you can not use the older EA series stuff (Loyal, XT, Brat) as they have a different bell housing.

I thought one of the STi's had a Final Drive of 3.545...

Jeffast you have destroyed my dreams as I was praying that I could figure out how to make a T56 into an AWD tranny. I am now crushed.

Thanks for the tips guys. I didn't realize that it was the EJ's that were what made a tranny transferable. Now that I know where to begin I just might get to the ending. And Huck, thank you for the budget build guide on tranny swaps. that's what I need.

appreciate the help guys. This is one of the better car forums I've ever had the opportunity to post on and I really appreciate all the help I've gotten.

You're welcome...

And Jason, Some of the WRX's have a 3.54 REAR diff....butt the transmission has a 3.90 FRONT diff and a reduction gear feeding the rear, to make it work with the 3.54 rear diff.

Huck infact all of the WRX transmission made for the USDM had the step down gear. The JDM 4.11 and 4.44 wrx transmissions were the only ones without them. Just some extra data when selecting a trans.

The 07+ STi 6mt's also began using this step down feature. Thus the availability of 3.545 R180's for us now..yay
