Engine turns over but won't fire!

Hi

I have a 92 lsl and got it back from the tranny guy a few days ago. I seem to have a problem. I got a new battery for the car. Tried starting it, it turns over good but will not start. When I got the car from the tranny guy, he said it drove good. Is there a procedure to starting these cars? Can't ask him as he is on holiday. Does the alarm prevent the car from starting? or anything else?

Thanks

Adam

If it cranks and doesn't start, Then you either have no spark OR no fuel. This could be caused by numerous things such as a cam sensor, crank sensor, igniter, and so on. Look in the how to section for how to check the codes in the ECU and that might point you in the proper direction. Good luck.

I had this problem, turns out that it was the igniter connections that are back up against the firewall, dead center. Tossed a few zip ties in there, and works like a charm.

Hope that's all it is.

Engine turns but won't fire

Hi Guys

I tried everything except changing plugs. It will try to fire once if sitting for a while which leads me to think either the fuel pump has given up or the injectors are clogged. I put 2 gallons in with a whole bottle of injector cleaner in the tank last night but it still will not fire. To be honest it feels like there is no fuel getting to the injectors. I can usually work on my cars but am having a problem locating the rubber fuel hose going to the injectors to check, especially in the 100 plus phoenix temprature. Is there an easy way? Where is the fuel pump so that i can see if its working?is there a fuse for the pump as i could not find one. I don't have a manual.

Thanks

Adam

You could feel the tubes going in and out of the fuel filter to see if there's pressure.

The fuel pump is under the back seat. It is under the round plate.

Engine turns but won't fire

Looks like there is fuel going in. I relieved the pressure first and then disconnected fuel line going from filter to injectors. Put the end in a glass bottle and cranked the engine. There was fuel in the bottle so there is no fuel problem. Got a chilton manual for the car(what a load of crap). Checked all electrical connections. All look good. So if anyone can give me any ideas what else to look for. Any svx owners in phoenix that might give a helping hand! I usually drive alfa or biturbos, which are much easier cars to fix. This car has got me stumped. My first experience with an svx has been unhappy so far. I am so wanting to drive it.

Did you check the filter? Worth a check

I checked the fuel line coming out of the filter, so am assuming filter is ok.

Your problem sounds electrical seeing as how you have proven fuel is pumping.

It could be a number of things, but you would need to look into the alarm situation. Having taken out the battery and replaced it, you may have inadvertently reset the immobiliser circuit. Maybe it is presuming a hot wiring attempt and is denying power to the ignition circuit.

Our cars here do not come with an OEM alarm. Can anybody in the US throw some light on how to reset the alarm for this man?

Joe

Engine turns but won't fire

Joe

That is something that I had eluded to in first post, and you may be right. I remember the tranny guy saying it drove good but it needed a new battery. I am assuming they had their own battery and put the dud original back in once they towed the car to me. I did buy a new battery. Since then the car has not started. As I do not have the remote for the alarm, can anyone in the us tell me how to disable/discoonect it. That may be the answer. Hopefully!!

That sounds plausible Adam.

I hope you get her sorted, it's all about the driving.

Have you checked for codes? There are multiple things that will keep the car from starting, even though it's cranking over fine - crank sensor, cam sensor, water temp sensor...

Engine turns but won't fire

I did the check code but gave up after the engine check light went past 100!Is that normal?
So far I have cleaned the maf, all connections and have taken out and cleaned 3 of the spark plugs. Once i put them in, thought i'd give it a try and cranked the engine. Sounds like it wants to start but something is preventing it. There is something else that i did forget to mention. The car has gas that is over 3 years old, so i got just over 2 gallons of fresh gas and also poured in a whole injector cleaner bottle. Could it be that the old gas is just so bad that it won't let it fire? I did check the gas going into the glass bottle, looked ok but as i am no petroleum expert, can't tell if its still bad. Any solutions?

Reset the ECU and try for codes again? I doubt it went past 100, you may have just missed the little breaks between shown codes. Although, maybe it's just wacky and the ECU is fried
