How-To Format
We are about to do some new updates around here and I will need to do some work on the How-To Documents. I want to know what formats would work best for members. The ones I have used in the past are as follows:
Word Excel If you can use these, great, but if you can't, or would rather see something else, please let me know. Thanks

That sounds great, Earl.
PDFs will work best. Browsers are better able to view/download PDFs. Plus it is more likely the document will look the same to the user as when it was created. And PDFs won't require the user to have a compatible version of Word or Excel. Also, it's much more difficult for a person to accidentally make changes to a PDF (unlike with a Word or Excel file). There are several free programs that will convert to PDF, so it shouldn't be any problem converting any other type of document. PrimoPDF is one. Just make sure that any embedded hyperlinks haven't been broken when you convert to PDF.

Agreed, PDF would be the best format. DOC files require me to download them before I can view them (I use Firefox), as do Excel files. PDF files, on the other hand, can both be viewed in any browser and can be downloaded and viewed that way. Muuuuch better.

PDF is the best option, and probably the least space and bandwidth on the server.

Plus, PDF's are cross-platform!!! I can't stress that enough. I run Linux and Mac at home (my wife's and kid's laptops are Windows... but only until I can replace them with Macs) and I can't tell you how often it drives me nuts to have to open DOC files. Yes, I have Office 2004 on my Mac, but it's an Intel Mac so it takes ages to come up and chows down RAM. OK, so I upgraded to 2G, but that's not the point; it's the pricipal of the thing
Seriously, not every SVXer is a Windows user. Under Linux, DOC files are virtually worthless because you've got to download them locally, open up OpenOffice and so forth... too much work. Give me a PDF I can click on and open up in Preview.

Upon further thought, I would like to see a web page version of the how to as well... just have a link to the PDF on there for printing purposes... you know, for those of you that lack a laptop in your garage.
