I love my outback (98 MT 5 speed) and it is fairly good on the corners as well. Just got back from a long trip with it and got 27.3 mpg on the freeway. I felt pretty good about that. Around town and freeway, I get a good solid 24 mpg.

-EPA rated at 21 city, 28 hwy
-Payload capacity of the truck bed is 800lbs, towing capacity is 2,400lbs

solution: throw some jump seats in the cargo bed ala teh Brat!

that's probably what i should have got the wifey, but she does enjoy getting into the boost from time to time in her WRX. she drove a base model Cavalier for so long, i wanted to get her something fun (and safe.)
Thanks Alan. My wife didn't seem to care about the Baja having just 4 seats, even though installing jump seats ala Brat would be so cool!!!

That's very good gas mileage. I passed Shelfy's response onto her and I'll pass this as well. Her current Lancer gets 30mpg in a true 50/50 driving loop. She realizes her mileage will go down slightly with a heavier car and a bigger engine, but the Brat is way more fuel efficient than other SUVs she was considering - i.e. Mitsu Endeavor.

We'll start looking at a few this Summer and probably pick one up by late summer/ early Fall. I'll post pics when we get it. It'll be kinda interesting to have an all Scooby family!

Nice looking car, too bad that pickup looking cars can never be registered under a person's name. You can register it under an enterprise and pay heavy yearly taxes

We are still living under 1932 rules and regulations, our politicians are more worried about themselves and their domination in parliament positions more than caring about people...

Under our law, if someone falls from his porch onto your car (parking below it), that means you are liable for his death and you go to jail....

Stupid hein?

I would recommend that your wife also look at the Outback. I know they're far more ubiquitous, especially in some areas, but I think they're far more useful. You can fit another person in them, carry larger cargo, not have that cargo get wet...etc.

I thought the Baja was cool at first, but I'd much rather have an Outback...and I do. I've seen people out caps over the bed - why not just buy an Outback?

I'll mention it to her, but she like the fact that the Baja has an open bed. She's really into gardening and it'll allow her to transport really tall plants and supplies from the Nursery/Home Depot/Lowes to our place.

Then it may actually make sense for her.

call me crazy, but i predict there will be 6 more threads about what car Chike plans to buy for his wife before he actually makes a purchase.

wife's friend just got a Kia Sorrento(?) SUV thing and likes it. she was looking at Nissan Xterras, and i was surprised at how cheap those things are. i assumed they would cost more than they did. she decided against the Xterra because it was too truck-like - not sure about the gas mileage.

Sorry Harry. She's not open to Forester's and Legacy or impreza wagons. I asked about the Outback wagon and she likes them better but also passed as she wants an open bed. She also doesn't want a car that requires premium fuel (so no Forester XT).

B9 Tribeca is also a no-no. No open bed and much worse fuel economy.

Doubt it. My wife is pretty steadfast in what she wants. I can make suggestions, but in the end the decision is hers on this one...

i like the hyundai tucson / kia sportage as well. but since it'd a be a tow vehicle, the 2.7l v6 won't cut it. i've been thinking about the hyundai santa fe, but the sorento is a much better looker. just went to kia's website and priced out a sorento lx 4x4 with only tow hitch and abs options. msrp was just over 23k. the high-dollar one i saw must have had every option.
