Handling Differences between 92 and 95

I need some advise from any body that has two SVX's. I am of the opinion that the handling on the 1995 is better then the 1992. Recently I went to change the steering rack in my 95 and found it was different to the 92 that I had planned to install. The difference seems to be with the cars ability to recenter.
Has anybody else found this or is it just in my head.
Tony

Speed assisted maybe??

I have driven both a 92 LSI (my son's) and my 95 non LSI and I noticed just the opposite---his handles better than mine. Just guessing, but think the speed assisted power steering on the LSI makes the difference. Just my thoughts.

My 92 (4WS) steers better than my 94 (speed-sensitive).

Could it be that your two racks are different ratios?

The "Standard" rack is 17.1:1
The "Speed Sensitive" rack is 16.2:1
The "4WS" rack is 14.2:1

can have either one of two types. Not interchangeable.
(could be mistaken)

Tony, you have not said if the two cars you mention, the '92 and the '95, are both native OZ market cars.

The reason I mention this is the same point Phil is making. In both Australian brochures on Jamsvx geocities site the Australian market SVX is down as getting the engine speed sensitive power steering. This is bog standard with the lower speed ratio as Phil lists above.

If by any chance your '95 car is Japanese, there is a high chance the car could have the road speed sensitive [or electronic steering as it is also known] type, and would be sharper.

The only other conclusion I can come to is that James is wrong when he says the Australian market only got one type of SVX. Perhaps as sales slowed, they introduced the better steering in the later cars?

Anybody know what is the truth about this?

Joe

Joe both of the 92's I own drive are the same way and are Oz cars the 95 is Oz as well. It could be somthing to do with what Phil mentions. Harvey has exactly the same car as my 95 and it would be interesting to get his comments. Given that my 95 has had a lot of changes I am not sure if I am comparing apples with apples. I was think of driving one of the 92's up to Harvey and for us both to see what we think of the difference.
I know you guys are probely think whats the big deal but the 92 is the race car and in its current form would not handle anywere as good as my 95.

Well we don't really have a wealth of information on Australia models, even with all the great work James did when he was in Australia.

Contacting Harvey is a great idea. Harvey has the WSM manual, he may have suggestions.

Keith is correct what he says, they are not too easily interchangeable. I looked up the manual, and interestingly the electronic road speed control model is also described in the OZ manual.

It would not be a bolt in solution, without also using the ECU.

If your '92 ECU is pre-wired for the power steering and also has the power steering control algorithm on board, then it will be easier to attempt. If the ECU is not wired or not compatible, then you have to swap in a different ECU and add the wiring also.

So far as I can see from the schematics, the steering control solenoid current sensing circuit gets two signals from the ECU, one from VSS2 on road speed, and one on engine speed. For the electronic steering to work properly it will need both these signals fed to it.

You should be able to tell what type it is by looking at it.
