As for the radiator, I'm going to put one in the front trunk. This is usually the spot where people add front mounted oil coolers. Other people that have done conversions to water-cooled engines have placed their radiators here and routed their water lines back with very few problems. The only catch is that you need to cut two small openings in the wheel wells for the hot air to exit. I have seen this on a V8 conversion that kept the engine temps down very nicely.
As for the ecu, my first attempt will be using a stock ecu. I'll need to pick up an OBDI to match my '92 engine and start playing with the wires. I think the stock Suby ecu would be better than trying to using a stand-alone system.

What about a cowl or a slightly raised hood center or just removing some of the weather stripping in the back of the area? I knew aa Impalla '94 pulled the strip and dropped under hood temps 20 degrees or so at the track.

In a 914 the front half and rear half of the front trunk are separated and sealed. This is because in between the front trunk and driver sits the fuel tank. If the hot radiator air is to exit it needs to be pretty close up front. I've seen the wheel well exits first-hand on a small block chevy so I figure it should work alright for me. My only concern was losing some structurally rigidity.

There is one website that I know of where someone documented their conversion. Another guy detailed his on the 914 club website . Both are very interesting. Now I just have to get some time off from work and keep going on mine.

Wow...the first subaru engine mounted in a manner that lowers the center of gravity over an L or V config. Nice!
The MR2s all have a front radiator BTW. Works quite well. I liberated an EG33 from a SVX some time ago and was searching for an adequately light chassis to put it in...unfortunately the MR2s are all transverse mount...never thought of the 914. That's hot sauce! |
