More upgrades
In the very near future, the new RAID array will be put online. This wont mean too much, but it will work a bit faster, I will have real time status of the health of the hard drives, and we will once again have a hot spare drive. Other improvements are more disk space, newer and slightly faster operating system, updated versions of the web server, PHP handler and the database backend. A few bugs might show up in this process, but I assure you I will do my best to take care of them as fast as possible. Most of the speed increases will not/cannot be seen until we upgrade the speed of the circuit to the server. This probably cannot be done until I get a job, or we agree upon some donations or dues. Right now I pay $60 a month for the connection to the server. I would like to upgrade this at some point soon due to activity levels. Also, I am looking into the options of adding regular email services to "dues" paying members. This probably wouldn't be of real interest unless we also added a web mail interface. I have been asked this by many people. After an hour long conversation with our security administrator, here is what the results were. There is a nice and FREE package available for us to do this, but it requires us to do some things that put the machine at a security risk. There are ways to accomplish this, but it would require a separate computer or a computer on a card ($450). This second machine can be isolated from potential break in, but still serve mail and or web mail. If there is a lot of interest from users wanting a email address like john_doe@subaru-svx.net, then I will continue to look into ways of accomplishing that goal. Just keep in mind, we will have to get some hardware donated or have another fund raiser.
This is just my update. It really isn't bad news. All is going well for the most part. And for those of you interested, I have an interview for a job in the IT Computer department at the Idaho State Police on Tuesday the 15th. I don't know how many people applied, but they only scheduled interviews for the top 10%. A 96 was required to get into the top 10 and I got a 98. Cross your fingers and wish me luck.
