Question OT: Screen resolutions?

I was just curious what screen resolution is most popular these days for viewing on the computer. I'm fixing up the NW SVX web site and wanted to make it easy to view by the majority. I figure the members here, with our vast diversity, would make for a good sampling of the general web-viewing population.

I use 1152x864 here at work with a 21" monitor.

I use 800x600 at home with a 17" monitor.

Talking

2560x1024 across two 19s.

Oh, and do a search. There has been at least one thread about screen resolutions before.

The 'safe' resolution used to be 640x480, but I think you can be safe with 800x600 now. 1024x768 would be maybe a little less safe, but probably average.

Thanks Nick, I'll do a search. Wow, we really have covered everything on this site haven't we! I would have never guessed this came up before.

Thanks your opinions on the various safe resolutions too, I know you are up on all that stuff, what with being a geek and all.

I did a poll once for the SVX World network site and it came back with 800X600

So I put everything in 780x550 table / frame (I hate frames)

You can't just use 800x600 since you have to give room for the scroll bar on the side, bottom and the menu bar at the top.

I myself use 1600x1400 on a 17" screen at home on one screen and 800x600 on my TV as an aux out for watching stuff from my bed.

1280X1024 because that's all my monitor supports.
We should start a new poll. I'm curious as to what it is. It seems as though most people are blind and use 800X600, otherwise everything's too small and they supposedly can't see anything.

I would say design for no more than 800x600. I run 1600x1200 on my 19" monitor but that doesn't necessarily mean I will run my web browser maximized. Often I will have several windows displayed at the same time on my screen.

too big = bad (have to scroll horizontally)
too small = no problem
