Restoring steering wheel?
My steering wheel shows signs of wear... the surface is polished - no cracks, though.
Has anyone used anything like this: http://www.leatherique.com/steering-wheels.html ?? Thanks, Tapani |

Re: Restoring steering wheel?
This looks promising. I have my old steering wheel sitting on my shelf in the garage, Maybe I'll send it to them to match the beige and order a kit. It couldn't hurt, my old steering wheel is shot anyway.

Re: Restoring steering wheel?
I bought the tan colored one for my 93 and it looks fabulous when it is done.
The color match is perfect. Follow the instructions for best results. I bought the same kit that Earl and many others have purchased from the guy in the message above ebay listing. I did this about 3 years ago and it still looks good, even while sitting in the hot Texas sun all the time.

Re: Restoring steering wheel?
I did the same thing on the beige wheel in my polo.
In the beige kit there are 2 colors; a darker beige for the wheel, shifter, e-brake, etc. and the lighter beige for the seats. The gray kit only comes in the one color for everything. My wheel is perfect and there is also a satin top coat available to further protect the finish from wear and provide a bit of the OEM sheen and reduce the flatness. Use the short nap tapping tool provided in the kit for applying an even finish and eliminating brush marks. I even dyed the airbag for a perfect match. I use the dye for other things in the car. Recoloring the faded rear seat release buttons, auxiliary switches, and even matching the screw heads in the door panels. .

Re: Restoring steering wheel?
My steering wheel came out okay with the seat restore product but eventually started to feel a bit tacky on warm humid days. After a few years it has worn off in several places. That being said I probably did not prepare the surface well enough, I didn't sand or rough it up at all and I may have put it on too thick. I have had much better luck with it on the seats.

Re: Restoring steering wheel?
Send Ronn an email inquiring about his Steering Wheel Re-Coat Kit for the dark beige or gray.
This kit includes a special applicator pad and an additional bottle of a Clear Satin Top Coat that will add a satin sheen that adds additional protection to the leather colorant. I believe the Steering Wheel Re-Coat Kit still sells for $24.95 with FREE shipping in the USA. He does not ship during the winter months as he cannot control freezing of the product while in transit. Re: Restoring steering wheel?
Taking Johns' advice I decided to redo my steering wheel. I first used a dish sponge the kind with a mild scrubby pad on one side. With the pad side I removed all the dye I had previously put on it. This left a very ugly brown steering wheel and I thought oh god this is never going to work. Next I wiped down with isopropyl alcohol, waited a day, then applied three light coats of seat restore and 1 top clear coat, waiting two days between each coat and not touching it in between.
When I started the process I did not expect to get good results, and at one point after sanding [but before dyeing] I purchased a replacement off ebay, but by the second coat I knew that I would not need it. Anyhow it is hard to capture in pictures, but it is slightly lighter color than stock and looks very smooth and even, except for a few places where you can see some slight wipe marks. The clear coat on top seems like it will prevent it from getting tacky and coming off. We'll see if it holds up. If not I have a decent replacement in the garage.

Re: Restoring steering wheel?
Looks good.
I've been undecided, but this seems to be turning out to be a good idea, if you have one that needs some attention.

Re: Restoring steering wheel?
Thanks for the tips..looks like patience is the key. What did you use to apply the color coats and clear coat...the special applicator pad?

Re: Restoring steering wheel?
The applicator pad it came with was not really working for me, I ended up applying it with a rag, seemed to go on smoother.
