Thumbs up Best News, for me, in a long time!!

Ok, my transmission might not be going bad after all.
Everyone knows of the resistor mod right? It is my guess that since the line pressure is at full all the time, more fluid is being used by the transmission. I checked my fluids once my problems began, it was one notch below full, so I thought it couldn't be fluid that's causing it. The transmission acting up fell right in the middle of a huge string of bad days/weeks, so I got depressed thinking I would have to get rid of my car. Well tonight i was thinking about how full line pressure would obviously mean the transmission would need more fluid than normal, so I added an extra quart of fluid, thinking what do I have to lose, and headed out to the closest freeway onramp. I floored it, second gear kicks in flawlessly, third gear kicks in flawlessly, and then fourth too kicks in flawlessly . I was so Excited I kissed the steering wheel and told my car I loved her. I am in such a good mood right now, I am so happy.

I had a '70 Olds Cutlass 350 auto-tranny that lost 4 quarts of fluid one white-knuckle trip many years back, and still got me home safely.
Go figger.

Ron.

Great news on your transmission. Nothing sucks quite like contemplation of thousands to spend just to get to normal. Certainly a cheap thing to try for others when things don't look so rosy - I'll have to file this idea away.

O/T: Ron, in '75 had a 1971 Fiat 124 Spyder that would peg the water temp gauge if the coolant ever got more than a quart low. Couldn't seem to get the expansion tank thing to work and the car never did blow a hose or anything, just seemed to like to tease and worry me.

I don't recall if my '68 124 even HAD an expansion tank. Of course, I kept mine filled with Chianti, so it never complained.

Noticed you didn't specify a "quart" of "what."

That is great news. I was dissapointed to hear that you were having problems with the tranny. Glad to hear it was that simple of a fix. Good to have you back with us in good spirits. Did I say spirits? I'll drink to that!!!

Question

So is there any danger in overfilling the tranny?

I'm sorry but I couldn't answer that. It was done by a good dealership that deals with quite a few SVXs on a day to day basis. So I'm guessing it's not terrible.

Maybe somebody with a more tech background will check in here, but basically overfilling at some point will cause aeration of the fluid. Then you're pumping bubbles which makes for bad things internal. Admittedly not a good explanation...
